Emissions and discharges
Explore how we aim to reduce the environmental impact of our campus and facilities to increase energy efficiency and reduce harmful emissions that have a huge impact on the planet.
Our objectives
- To reduce the environmental impact and costs arising from energy use in buildings through the better management of resources and increased energy efficiency, and reduce emissions from fuel consumption by our vehicles, as well as meeting the requirements of legislation.
- Take a whole-organisation approach so that carbon reduction becomes embedded in management decision-making across the full range of the University’s operations, and by undertaking projects that will lead directly to measurable emissions and energy consumption reduction.
Targets
- Edge Hill University will become carbon neutral by 2030.
- Monitor and report on the impact on annual emissions from University pool fleet following the switch to hybrid vehicles in December 2025. Using findings to feed into future procurement exercises. Deadline: January 2027.
- Edge Hill University will reach Net Zero by 2035.
- Report on our annual carbon emissions both internally and externally via our annual report. Deadline: Ongoing target to be reviewed annually, next review date February 2027.
Baselines
- Whole University Scope 1 and 2 CO2e emissions 2018/19 = 6229 t CO2e.
Progress against baseline from audits:
- Whole University Scope 1 and 2 CO2e emissions for 2023/24 = 3794 t CO2e.
- Student accommodation attributed Scope 1 and 2 emissions for 2023/24 = 2276 t CO2e.
