The academic year is split into terms during which students are required to engage with study. The length and pattern of the terms depend on the type of programme the student is studying. The period between each of the terms is normally a holiday period.

Although breaks often fall at the end of each term, some courses may also include mid-term holidays which are not reflected in the published term dates. This is because some professional programmes do not follow the same holiday patterns as non-professional programmes.
