Edge Hill is committed to ensuring our digital infrastructure is as sustainable as possible.

Guidance documents

The University has developed the below guidance documents to support staff and students understand how to reduce, energy, waste and emissions related to digital infrastructure both in the workplace and at home.

Our website and sustainability

At Edge Hill we are always looking at how we can improve the sustainability credentials of our website. Part of this focuses on measures we can take to reduce the digital transfer of the website/webpages. Measures taken to date, as of the academic year 2025/26, include:

  1. Compressing images uploaded to the website and produce a scr-set for each, along Edge Hill to serve the smallest size to each end user based on the screen size they use.
  2. For static assets (KS/CSS etc.) Edge Hill instruct the browser to cache them for up to 10 years, with the browser sending the has to confirm if its changed or not periodically. This prevents the data needing to be sent more than once depending on the browser settings.
  3. For non-logged in users their browser is also told to load HTML from the cache for one hour.
