We have 3 to 4 Edge Hill University Taught Masters and MRes fully funded intercalations (with stipend) places over the next 3 years, starting in September 2024. These intercalations are usually taken at the end of Year 3 of the MBChB. Please note any application for external intercalations needs to be pursued directly via the medical school and not via the ICAT office.

FAQs
How much is the bursary and when will I get paid?
The total stipend is £19,162, equating to approximately £1596.83 per month, paid monthly through Payroll for 12 months
Will I be taxed on the Stipend bursary payment?
No. As the stipend is a true bursary for studies only (students are not doing any work at all for us in relation to the payment), then it should not be classed as earned income, but should still be declared. You would need to speak to HMRC for confirmation as to whether this would affect your tax with your other employer in relation to any tax allowances they may be using. The tax office number is 0300 200 3300.
Is the stipend funding for the Intercalated Masters based upon household income, or is it fully funded for everyone?
Fully funded universally for all successful applicants.
Will I be able to apply for the Post Graduate Masters Loan (PGL) from SFE?
Yes – students receiving financial support from NIHR (the monthly stipend payments) are eligible for funding towards an intercalated masters course with SFE. PLEASE NOTE this does not apply to students who completed the Foundation year/Y0.
Will I still be eligible for a Reduced Rate Maintenance Loan (RRML) with in receipt of NHS Bursary?
Yes, you would remain eligible for the RRML during years of study, as long as the Masters award is confirmed at the same time as the MBChB award is confirmed.
Will I be able to step back onto 4th year of the MBChB regardless of the outcome of the Masters programme?
Yes, the outcome of the Masters has no bearing on re-joining the MBChB programme as planned
What are the requirements to intercalate from the MBChB?
You must pass all 3rd year summative assessments and have confirmation of no professional concerns
If I do not pass 3rd year of the MBChB, and therefore cannot take the intercalation, can I still apply for the UG student loan to continue with 4th year of the MBChB?
Yes, you can still apply for the student loan in this scenario, however it does not leave much time for applications to be approved before start of term. It is recommended that students wait for 3rd year outcomes before applying for either funding route.
Will there be any cross-over with the intercalation programme and starting back on Y4 of the MBChB?
No. Programme Leaders of the intercalation programmes have agreed a final submission date of end of August, however it is advised that you aim to submit in mid-August to enable you to have a break before returning to the MBChB the first week of September.
Would I potentially be able to get a publication with an MRes and/or MA/MSc?
