Research
We lead major international projects, such as researching coastal community vulnerability to storms in Thailand (Newton Fund) and we have ongoing research investigating evidence and impacts of hurricanes in the geological past in the Gulf of Mexico. We also have a strong research areas in Hazards with research in Volcanology, Palaeohazards and Disaster Management and Recovery.
Our research activities are aligned with the University’s Institute for Social Responsibility and the Data Science STEM Research Centre.

My life in volcanoes
Dr Joaquin Cortes caught the volcano bug growing up in the shadow of one of the most active volcanoes on earth, Villarrica in Chile. He is interested in the thermodynamic processes that lead to the generation of igneous and metamorphic rocks. We talk to Dr Joaquin about his research into volcanoes.

Professor Paul Aplin works on peat swamp conservation which contributes to environmental policy documents on sustainable palm oil. Funded by the Royal Geographic Society, he has recently been working in North Selangor Peatland Forest in Malaysia. We talk to Paul about the dangers of palm oil production.
