Bridget Amo is studying for a degree in BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult), and sees her scholarship win as a step towards improving women’s health in Ghana’s less privileged communities through education, after researching trends in the country’s health issues and distribution of care.
Closer to home, she’s also been educating black women in her community about health risk factors, disease prevention and management – something she now wants to develop further through open days and global conferences.
On campus, Bridget, from Manchester, represents other minority students as a vocal member of Edge Hill’s student advisory panel and contributes to the University’s Diversity Access Programmes.
Commitment to equal opportunities and putting her learning to good use outside her studies has led to Bridget scooping both Excellence and University Scholarships.
Bridget’s experience of growing up as a member of a Black Asian Minority Ethnic group with a lack of representative professional role models left her feeling uncertain about achieving her aspirations. However, the knowledge, skills and confidence she’s gained through studying at Edge Hill has fuelled her desire to use her degree and experiences for good and to inspire others.
“As a nursing student, I can use my experiences and support black women to take control of their health. I’m proud of my efforts in advocating for and educating them about their health, and providing free health screenings. This can help overcome the lack of awareness and financial resources that can lead to health disparities in this community.
And Bridget sees her course at Edge Hill as key to realising her ambitions:
“This degree has increased my employability by allowing me to provide excellent patient care, communicate effectively, lead and manage teams, and use technology and informatics tools proficiently. It’s provided me with numerous opportunities for personal development and growth, networking, and specialised knowledge in specific areas of nursing.
“And this scholarship will allow me to devote more attention to my studies, participate in additional professional development opportunities, and contribute to my long-term goals, including supporting women’s health in Ghana. I would like to join the UK Aid and medical mission trips and pursue a Masters degree in Law, specialising in Medical Law.”
