May 28, 2026

Edge Hill student Lily Wyn-Jones was proud to represent the University and her home country Wales at the British University Taekwondo League (BUTL) World Championships.

The Edge Hill scholarship winner earned a top 10 finish and now has her sights set on the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) World Championships in the Autumn.

Going up against global competitors on the international stage, Lily reflected on the “huge honour” of representing Edge Hill and Wales in such a prestigious event.

Lily, a sports and exercise psychology student, said: “Competing internationally while flying the Welsh flag was a very proud moment for me, and it meant a lot to represent both my country and my university on the mats.

“It was my first competition in over a year due to injury, so placing in the top 10 in ‘patterns’ was something I was particularly proud of. It was great to return to competition, and it has motivated me to keep improving for future events.”

Lily has enjoyed many opportunities thanks to the University’s Sports Scholarship, which supports talented athletes to develop their sporting performance including through financial benefits for training and competitions.

The 20-year-old is encouraging fellow students to explore the scholarships on offer at Edge Hill, describing them as a “great opportunity” to develop themselves personally and professionally alongside their studies.

“The financial support helps me travel around the UK for monthly national British training squad sessions and competition costs, while the personal training sessions and free gym membership have been a major contributor to my fitness over the past two years.

“I’ve also benefited from strength and conditioning support, psychological support and nutrition advice, which have all helped me recover from injury and improve my preparation for competitions.”

Lily, from Flintshire, is now looking ahead to the ITF Championships in Spain, her first competition abroad.

“Representing Edge Hill University, Wales and my club, Flintshire and Deeside Taekwondo (One Martial Arts), is a huge privilege,” she added.

Lily recently won Gold at the Inclusive International Taekwondo World Championships while living with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND).
