NHS Learning Support Fund
The NHS Learning Support Fund (LSF) provides additional funding for eligible healthcare students.
This webpage is to help provide guidance for FHSCM students if applicable, but all direct concerns/ queries should be addressed through the NHS LSF themselves.
The NHS LSF is a 3rd party organisation. We have no control over their remit of timelines and/or decision making on funding or relevant exemptions.

You need to ensure you are: –
- on a relevant programme.
- Actively studying.
- Eligible for tuition fees and maintenance support through the Student Loans Company or show you meet that criteria.
- Not already in receipt of the NHS Bursary.
Please check available funding with the NHS LSF directly.
- You need to sign in or create a NHS Learning Support Fund account | NHSBSA and follow the relevant guidance.
- You need to ensure your details for them meet the details the university hold for you. Any mismatched information produces delays.

- If you start your course or your next academic year after September or October 2026, your payment dates are different.
- The payment dates are dependent on when you start your course.
If our search results on the NHS LSF do not show your application, it means your account has not been accepted yet. You need to contact the NHS directly about your application: – Contact NHS Learning Support Fund | NHSBSA
- You need to ensure your application has been accepted and approved through Contact NHS Learning Support Fund | NHSBSA.
- You need to check you are fully registered at the university. We cannot confirm attendance or update any changes for part-enrolled students.
- NHS LSF provides an attendance confirmation window to the University. All students who have confirmed their attendance with NHS LSF and have a valid and approved application will have their attendance confirmed during this window.
- You need to ensure your application has been accepted and approved through Contact NHS Learning Support Fund | NHSBSA.
- You need to check you are fully registered at the university. We cannot confirm attendance or update any changes for part-enrolled students.
- NHS LSF provides an attendance confirmation window to the University. All students who have confirmed their attendance with NHS LSF and have a valid and approved application will have their attendance confirmed during this window.
- If your interruption has been officially confirmed and processed by the university, the university must advise the NHS LSF that you are no longer in active study, and NHS LSF funding will be paused.
- Â As and when you resume studies and you have fully enrolled, we can advise the NHS LSF of your return.
- Please note, the last date of engagement as confirmed by the university is what is reported to the NHS LSF.
- If your interruption has been officially confirmed and processed by the university, the university must advise the NHS LSF.
- If you are interrupting your studies due to health reasons, and you are in receipt of maintenance support from Student Finance and if applicable NHS LSF, you may be eligible for a 60-day extension of funding from your last date of engagement.
- However, a requirement to qualify for this extension depends on evidence being provided to us before we advise Student Finance/NHSBSA of your interruption. Please submit appropriate medical evidence to [email protected].
- As and when you resume studies, we can advise the NHS LSF of your return.

- If you are interrupting your studies due to Maternity/ Adoption reasons, you may be eligible to receive the same payments as before.
- We will advise the NHS LSF of any leave and resumption who will process accordingly if you meet the eligibility criteria.
- Once your return has been officially confirmed, and as and when you return and are fully enrolled at the university, we will submit a ‘Resumption’ request to the NHS LSF.
- This can take up to 25 working days to be processed by the NHS LSF.
- If your withdrawal has been officially confirmed and processed by the university, the university will advise the NHS LSF and your payments will stop.
- The NHS LSF will work out if you are owed an under/overpayment and contact you to advise.
- Please note, the last date of engagement as confirmed by the university is what is reported to the NHS LSF.
- This can take up to 25 working days to be processed by the NHS LSF.
- If your withdrawal has been officially confirmed and processed by the university will advise the NHS LSF.
- You must update your NHS LSF account to show your course details for your new university, and they confirm your attendance themselves.
- Additional funding is not a guarantee from the NHSBSA, and each case is considered based on the mitigating reasons provided.
- An ‘additional funding’ request can be submitted to the NHS LSF on the student’s behalf. The NHS LSF do not accept financial reasons, academic failure or covid as mitigating circumstances. Evidence of mitigating circumstances may be required.
- If applicable, the university will submit the request for additional funding once your repeat year commences and you are fully enrolled on your course.
- This can take up to 25 working days to be processed by the NHS LSF.
- The decision to grant this additional funding is the NHS BSA decision.
- Additional funding is not a guarantee from the NHSBSA, and each case is considered based on the mitigating reasons provided.
- Any additional funding is pro-rata, based on the outstanding placement hours.
- An ‘additional funding’ request can be submitted to the NHS LSF on the student’s behalf by the FHSCM Records team. The NHS LSF do not accept financial reasons, academic failure or covid as mitigating circumstances.
- If applicable, the university will submit the request for additional funding once your placement has commenced and the faculty have confirmed your attendance. It is the student’s responsibility to let the FHSCM Records team know if they stop attending the placement.
- This can take up to 25 working days to be processed by the NHS LSF.
- The decision to grant this additional funding is the NHS BSA decision.
