Talk 4 Number is a small group programme that enables learners in Year 3 and Year 4 to develop metacognition and talk fluently about their mathematics. It is also suitable for learners in Year 3 or above who are in the later stages of learning English as an Additional Language.
The programme includes:
- detailed session plans and handbook guidance.
- extensive ready-to-use resources, including the big table-top display book with a built-in whiteboard.
- mathematics subject knowledge to enhance delivery.
- mathematics vocabulary development.
- language structures and functions subject knowledge.
How Talk 4 Number works
- Focused delivery: 24 half-hour sessions, three times a week for eight weeks, led by a trained teaching assistant
- Confident learners: pupils build mathematical language, strengthen calculation skills, and develop reflection and metacognition
- Seamless support: delivered alongside regular maths lessons, with training that runs topic by topic
- Stronger practice: teaching assistants are guided by a Link Teacher within school for maximum impact.

Training and resources
Talk 4 Number is delivered by an accredited ECC Trainer. The training is for teaching assistants – with some input from a link teacher. Mathematics subject knowledge is also delivered to enhance your knowledge. You will receive Mathematics vocabulary development and language structures and functions subject knowledge too.
