Edge Hill University partnership with the Isle of Man
Edge Hill University has a long-established partnership with the Isle of Man. The Island is home to 31 primary schools and one Manx-language school, five secondary schools and a university college.
We have worked with many of these settings for several years to provide Professional Practice Placement opportunities to our trainee teachers.
If you are an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) trainee, you may be able to apply for a Professional Practice Placement on the Island. This depends on your programme and will be for a specific placement. This is because the majority of ITE training must be completed in England; therefore, only particular placements are available to be completed outside of England. If you are interested, please contact the Partnership Team who can discuss this further with you.
Most trainees will travel by ferry to the Isle of Man on the Saturday before the placement commences. This allows you to get your bearings and settle in before the placement commences the following Monday.
Why apply for a placement on the Isle of Man?
- The schools we work with enjoy supporting trainee teachers and have often worked with us for many years.
- Manx schools have a focus on outdoor education, providing a wide variety of cultural and adventurous opportunities for children and young people. There is no Ofsted, there are no SAT tests and teacher assessment is continually refined and developed.
- We arrange accommodation for trainees within a commutable distance from their allocated schools.
- Trainees may wish to explore the local area during their time on the Isle of Man and learn about its history and heritage.
What do previous trainees think of their experience on the Isle of Man?
“I had a wonderful time, met some great people and was placed in a fantastic school which supported me through the early stages of my practice. I enjoyed being able to develop my practice in a new area and adjust to life away from home which, prior to the placement, I had not experienced.”
Jack: PGCE Primary Education with QTS, 2022-2023.
“My placement school was amazing. I had so much support from both my class teacher and mentor throughout my time on placement and felt really welcomed and at home at Michael Primary School. Whilst being given plenty of support I was also given lots of independence which allowed me to explore my creativity with lessons. I loved working on the Island and loved all staff and children in this school. It was the best experience and opportunity and I’m 100% happy I did it.”
Lucy: BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS, 2022-2023.
