The Intelligent Visual Computing Research Centre is a platform for developing effective visual computing and artificial intelligence techniques, accumulate insight and knowledge, and apply them to understand and solve the real-world problems, strengthen our links to industries, and contribute to the region and the UK economy and society.
The Centre’s aims:
- To be the world-class leader in research, scholarship, commercialization, and education in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence.
- Perform fundamental and applied research upon which future Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence industries can be built.
- Deliver the highest quality all-inclusive education and research experience in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence at all levels from GCSE/A-Levels to undergraduate to doctoral and postdoctoral levels to develop a highly skilled workforce for the North-West England and the UK’s economic development.

Visual AI: Noise removal and image enhancement, image and video analysis, semantic segmentation, object detection and classification, action, activity and behaviour recognition, fine-grained visual classification, digital pathology, medical imaging, microscopic image analysis and recognition, and early detection and diagnosis of cancer.
Drone AI, land surveying, land use segmentation and classification, crop monitoring and management, emergency planning and coastal management, building/structures inspections, and greenspace and greenhouse management.
Multimodal AI, human-machine/vehicle/robot interaction, wearable computing, social robotics, intelligent autonomous vehicles, real-time traffic analysis, and factory automation.
