Numbers Count is a proven mathematics intervention designed for learners who experience the greatest difficulty with maths.
- Numbers Count 1 – for learners in Years 1 to 3
- Numbers Count 2 – for learners in Years 4 to 9
Led by a specially trained teacher, the programme not only accelerates progress for pupils but also establishes an in-school mathematics specialist who can collaborate with colleagues, engage with parents, and contribute to raising standards across the whole school community.
How Numbers Count works
- Personalised programmes: developed after a detailed diagnostic assessment for each learner.
- Early start: teachers begin delivering lessons after just two training days
- Focused delivery: at least three half-hour lessons a week, taught individually or in pairs/small groups.
- Active learning: rigorous, engaging lessons centred on number and calculation.
- Wider impact: teachers liaise with parents and share specialist knowledge with colleagues, helping to raise standards across the school.
Impact on achievement
Case study: Marine Park First School’s journey with Every Child Counts

Marine Park First School is the largest First School in North Tyneside and, including Nursery, can accommodate up to 520 children. The school teaches the Becoming 1ˢᵗClass@Number programme and has staff trained in 1ˢᵗClass@Number for Years 2, 3, and 4. They also use Numbers Count as an intervention programme.
Class teachers report that pupils show increased confidence and engagement in lessons, enabling them to celebrate success, build trust, and deepen their understanding. Find out how you could have this in your school too.
Training and resources
Numbers Count training is available online, delivered by an accredited ECC trainer over seven sessions across 2 terms. The programme builds mathematics subject and pedagogical knowledge and supports the Numbers Count Teacher to become an in-house specialist mathematics teacher who can support in raising standards for all learners. On completion of training, the teacher and school gain ECC accreditation.
