There are three 1stClass@Number mathematics intervention programmes available to schools:

  • Becoming1stClass@Number for learners who need further support to secure the Early Learning Goal for Number .
  • 1stClass@Number 1: for learners who need further support to achieve the age-related expectations of the Year 1 curriculum.
  • 1stClass@Number 2: for learners who need further support to achieve the age-related expectations the Year 2 curriculum.

Each programme is delivered to a small cohort of learners by a trained teaching assistant.

How 1ˢᵗClass@Number works

  • Delivered by trained teaching assistants: structured lesson plans with supporting teaching resources.
  • Adaptable ready-made sessions delivered in addition to the usual class maths lesson, 3 times per week for 30 minutes each over 10-15 weeks.
  • Stimulating, enjoyable games and activities engage the learners and build their confidence.
  • Simple assessments helps the teaching assistant to tailor sessions to the learners needs.
  • Seamless: supports the National Curriculum for Mathematics & provides targeted use of the Pupil Premium.
  • Ready to go: work with learners after the first session of teaching assistant training.

Impact on achievement

Our intervention programmes are designed to target support where it’s needed most, making effective use of Pupil Premium funding. They align with the National Curriculum to strengthen core maths learning, boost attainment and confidence in number and calculation, and make maths enjoyable through engaging activities and games. At the same time, they empower teaching assistants with training, resources, and subject knowledge, while demonstrating real impact through clear evidence of progress.

Stramongate School is a one-form entry primary located in a diverse urban community in the North West of England. The school currently has around 210 learners on roll, with a significant proportion eligible for Pupil Premium and a growing number of learners with English as an Additional Language.

The school’s key priorities are ensuring that every learner makes sustained progress from their individual starting points and that no learner is left behind. Particular focus is placed on early intervention, closing attainment gaps in literacy and numeracy, and supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing and resilience.

Training and resources

Training that makes an immediate impact

1ˢᵗ Class@Number training is delivered by accredited ECC Trainers who effectively support teaching assistants to build subject knowledge & mathematics pedagogy. Training runs alongside programme delivery allowing the intervention to start in school immediately. It includes allocated time for a school Link Teacher, to support, manage & evaluate 1ˢᵗ Class@Number.

Resources and support

The programmes are fully resourced in one package; clear adaptable lesson plans and supporting resources. Schools can focus on the intervention delivery to learners. For subsequent learner cohorts, resources are available online to download. Support is available from ECC or your trainer via email or phone and there is access to the ECC data system, providing detailed analyses of impact and learners progress.
