In June 2025, ECC’s 1stClass@Number 1 programme was recognised by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) as a “Promising Programme.” This recognition follows an independent evaluation conducted by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER), which highlighted the positive impact of our approach in schools. Being featured by the EEF marks a significant milestone and reinforces our commitment to evidence-informed practice and improving outcomes for learners.

Chris Paterson, EEF co-chief executive, said: “A good foundation in numeracy is so important for success later in school. This is why it is vital we help pupils become confident calculators early on.
“It is particularly exciting to see such positive results for the 1stClass@Number 1 programme, adding to previous evaluations that indicated its potential to build children’s maths skills.
“The results of this evaluation of 1stClass@Number 1 demonstrate the programme’s potential in helping to build these skills for young people. We’re delighted to now be adding this to our growing list of Promising Programmes and hope that school leaders continue to lean on this as a trusted resource to help support their decision making.”
Our mathematics intervention programmes
Every Child Counts has 4 ‘families’ of mathematics intervention programmes, each meeting the needs of targeted groups of pupils. All come with extensive, attractive ready–to–use resources, written guidance manuals and the highest quality face-to-face training.
Teachers and teaching assistants can start teaching straight after their first training day. The training then runs parallel with their teaching in their training term.
The impact of ECC and our mathematics intervention programmes
The children have loved taking part in this small group intervention and have developed confidence in their mathematic abilities. They have made accelerated progress which has meant that they have almost caught up to their peers. We are now working with our second cohort of children and the results are looking equally positive! The training for our staff has also been invaluable – we now have the expertise and the resources to run this successful intervention for many years to come.
