Step Three: Advanced Critical Care HEA4202

Overview

This is only available to students who have undertaken module HEA4201.

This module has been designed in partnership with Liverpool Heart and Chest Foundation NHS Trust (LHCH) to support the development of critical care staff in order to gain appropriate knowledge and skills to successfully complete the National Adult Critical Care competencies at Step Three of the National Framework. Students will be expected, through engagement with this module, to consolidate their previously developed expert knowledge, skills and technical ability in order to demonstrate, without direction, the competent management of the complex critically ill patient based upon relevant evidence and established practice. The module will focus upon the development of effective leadership within a critical care environment in order to problem solve complex situations, offer solutions, lead a team and develop others through negotiation and enhanced communication skills. The intention is to develop a practitioner who provides clinical nursing leadership, supervision and support to teams to optimise safe standards of patient care on each shift in a timely manner in accordance with the recommendations of Francis (2013) and in light of the Core Standards for Intensive Care Units (2013).

Who is this module for?

This module will be particularly attractive to established nurses and ODP’s who will be expected to have evidenced achievement of Step two Competencies and be working in an area that supports Step Three competency development.

What are the key aims of the module?

Demonstrate critical application of expertise in achievement of Step Three competencies (National Competency Framework for Adult Critical Care).

How will I study?

This module is only available to students who have undertaken module HEA4201. The module will be delivered at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

• Professional, legal and ethical aspects of critical care
• Critical reflection to enhance practice
• Knowledge of applied relevant anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology
• Recognition of health abnormalities
• Competency to assess, plan and implement and evaluate care for patients with health abnormalities including the ability to plan and contribute to rehabilitation alongside the MDT
• Knowledge relating to pharmacology and pharmacokinetics
• Knowledge of investigation, interpretation and application of results
• Knowledge of treatment modalities including safe and effective use of equipment
• Competency in managing emergency situations
• End of life care
• Intra and Inter-hospital transfer
• Critiquing practice and policy underpinning care.

How will I be assessed?

The range of assessments for this module demonstrates learning and assessment that is situated in the reality of contemporary practice. Some of which is at the forefront of a discipline and requires description and critical commentary upon particular aspects of the professional role as underpinned by current research and advanced scholarship, in the learner’s discipline and unique context of practice.

The assessment of this module, benchmarked against the National Critical Care competencies, comprises the following:

• A 3000 word critically reflective assignment considering leadership and decision-making in complex care circumstances.
• A 1000 word critique of a selected Step here competency.

Completion of Step 3 competencies (Pass/Fail) designed to evidence the consolidation of core critical care skills, independently problem solve complex situations and enhance leadership qualities in order to supervise and instruct others.

On successful completion you will:

• Negotiate with and supervise others to critically examine and quality assure safe effective clinical practice.
• Critically reflect on the decision-making process in managing complex critical care.
• Critically analyse leadership responsibilities when managing a team in the delivery of complex care.
