Examine the principles and practices of the FinTech sector as you investigate crypto technologies, explore artificial intelligence, understand the role of commercial banking and more. You will learn the latest teachings in the fields of finance, economics and computing. These economic and financial theories will be applied to practical concepts such as programming language.

Develop your programming skills alongside analysing real-time financial data in our Bloomberg Suite, and develop an artificial intelligence system as you explore how organisations collect data. We will prepare you to feel confident in your future career as you continue to analyse large data sets within the financial sector, as well as developing skills on market analysis and trading.

As a future banking and finance practitioner, you will consider ethical and sustainable financial practices, appreciating the current issues in FinTech. You will graduate with an understanding of the range of disciplines involved in the financial industry, with the opportunity to delve deeper into your personal area of interest through the dissertation module.

What you'll study

On our MSc Financial Technology degree, you’ll develop key competencies in the field of finance, economics and computing which are essential for career progression within the Financial Technology (FinTech) sector.

You’ll explore the characteristics of the banking system and gain a greater understanding of how its complex interactions with financial institutions and markets impact on domestic and global economies. You’ll delve into financial decision-making where you’ll get to grips with domestic and global financial markets and techniques used for financial analysis and raising capital. You’ll also become more familiar with the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria and how it can be used to support sustainable financial decision-making.

From a computing perspective, you’ll learn the common ways in which AI systems work, including the legal and ethical challenges associated with the use of these models. You’ll also develop an increased understanding of Blockchain, Crypto and digital technologies and the evolution of legal and regulatory frameworks that address new technologies, especially in the financial context.

There’ll also be plenty of opportunities to develop essential practical skills in this field. As well as improving your understanding of global financial markets and investment practices, our Market Analysis and Trading module will equip you with the chance to develop advanced skills by using Bloomberg Terminal data platform in our Bloomberg Suite. You’ll get the chance to resolve real world tasks linked to big data using advanced data analysis techniques and tools and our Dissertation module will give you the opportunity to pursue independent research linked to a topic identified within the programme.

By the end of the programme, you’ll be well-equipped and technically capable across the required subjects in the evolving FinTech sector.

The course utilises a variety of summative assessment methods, such as academic critical essays, examinations, simulations, case studies, reports, group presentations and portfolios.

Who will be teaching you

All modules are delivered by experienced lecturers and professors who have research specialism and/or professional experience in their subject matter.

You can expect to receive your timetable at enrolment. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day or evening of the week.

Where your course includes optional modules, these are to provide an element of choice within the course curriculum. The availability of optional modules may vary from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. This means that the availability of specific optional modules cannot be guaranteed. Optional module selection may also be affected by timetabling requirements. Some restrictions on optional module choice or combinations of optional modules may apply.

Entry criteria

A degree equivalent to a UK lower second class (2:2) honours degree ideally in a cognate discipline (accounting/finance/economics). We welcome applicants from noncognate degrees that have strong transferable knowledge and skills e.g. computer sciences/law/mathematics.

A lower honours degree attainment may be admitted where you can provide evidence of experience and/or prior learning, at the discretion of the department.

You may be invited to an interview.

Overseas qualifications will be assessed using ECCTIS (formerly NARIC) to ascertain comparability.

Please note, the above examples may differ from actual offers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awards may also be accepted.

If you have a minimum of two A Levels (or equivalent), there is no maximum number of qualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. This includes additional qualifications such as Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), AS Levels that haven't been continued to A Level, and General Studies AS or A Level awards.

English language requirements

International students require IELTS 6.5, with a score no lower than 6.0 in each individual component, or an equivalent English language qualification.

If your current level of English is half a band, one band, or one-and-a-half bands lower, either overall or in one or two elements, you may want to consider our Pre-Sessional English course.
