Success@Arithmetic helps pupils gain the fluency and confidence they need in number and calculation. With two practical, ready-to-use intervention programmes, it gives learners the focused support to strengthen number sense, master written methods, and build lasting mathematical understanding.
- Success@Arithmetic Number Sense: for learners in Year 3 and older who need support to understand the number system and develop fluency with number facts.
- Success@Arthmetic Calculation: for learners in Year 5 and older who need support to understand and develop fluency with formal written methods.
Success@Arithmetic training empowers colleagues to deliver this effective maths intervention from day one by developing effective pedagogical approaches, having a strong focus on mathematical subject knowledge, and promoting a partnership between teachers and teaching assistants to raise achievement.
How Success@Arithmetic works
- Train: A lead teacher and up to three teaching assistants train together.
- Assess: after a diagnostic interview, a selected series of Success@Arithmetic steps form a tailored programme of up to 24 sessions.
- Teach: the teaching assistant delivers to up to three pupils. You can start the implementation straight after the first day of training.
- Support: teaching assistants are trained alongside intervention delivery, guided by accredited ECC trainers.
- Progress: promotes mathematical thinking and understanding and develops secure and fluent calculation methods through carefully staged progression.
Impact on achievement
Case Study: Every Child Counts – Success@Arithmetic at Cleobury Mortimer Primary School

Cleobury Mortimer Primary School is a thriving rural school in the small market town of Cleobury Mortimer, South Shropshire.
The school has 234 children across ten classes, with 19% eligible for Pupil Premium funding. A current priority for the school is to support the bottom 20% of pupils in terms of attainment, ensuring that every child has the tools and confidence to succeed.
To address this priority, Cleobury Mortimer Primary School chose to participate in the Every Child Counts (ECC) programme. They were drawn to ECC as a trusted, evidence-based intervention that streamlined the range of support strategies already in place.
As a result of Success@Arithmetic we have seen a significant impact on the children’s confidence, in the sessions and also in our whole class maths lessons. They are offering their thoughts in lessons and are much more active in sharing their thinking, whilst using the correct mathematical terms. They are reasoning more mathematically!
