Develop Your Practice in Dyslexia Teaching and Assessment
The Dyslexia Alternative Pathway CPD is an online professional development programme designed for teachers and support staff who already hold AMBDA (Accredited with the British Dyslexia Association) or equivalent for Pre-16 or Post-16 and wish to extend their practice into an additional phase of education.
Delivered by Edge Hill University, the course supports practitioners to develop their teaching, assessment, and report writing skills in line with current professional guidance and practice.

- Practitioners looking to extend their assessment and teaching practice into an additional phase of education
- Educators who have access to relevant learners for the purposes of teaching practice and assessment activities
What are the pathway options?
AMBDA FE/HE CPD – Teach and Assess Post-16 Learners
Designed for practitioners who currently hold AMBDA status and wish to teach and assess learners in further and higher education settings.
Participants must be working with Post-16 learners for the purposes of the course.
AMBDA CPD – Teach and Assess Pre-16 Learners
Designed for practitioners who currently hold AMBDA FE/HE status and wish to teach and assess learners under the age of 16.
Participants must be working with Pre-16 learners for the purposes of the course.
What will I study?
The course focuses on practical professional development and applied learning. Initially, you will be supported in planning, delivering and evaluating 10 lessons for your chosen learner. You will then assess a learner for dyslexia, receiving guidance on testing techniques and feedback to help develop your report writing skills.
Throughout the programme, participants are supported to:
- Plan, deliver, and evaluate 10 lessons with a chosen learner
- Develop teaching approaches tailored to dyslexic learners
- Build confidence in dyslexia assessment procedures and testing techniques
- Produce a dyslexia assessment report with tutor feedback and guidance
- Reflect on assessment outcomes and professional practice
The programme is designed in line with the 2025 SASC guidance on report writing. This guidance states that assessors are expected to undertake extended training, mentoring, and professional development relevant to the areas and age ranges they assess.
How is the course delivered?
The course is delivered entirely online, allowing participants to study alongside existing professional commitments.

What are the course outcomes?
On successful completion, participants will:
- Receive a 15-hour CPD certificate from Edge Hill University
- Be eligible to apply for additional AMBDA accreditation in the opposite age phase to their current qualification
- Develop greater confidence in teaching, assessment, and dyslexia report writing
