Entry requirements

We welcome applicants with a range of qualifications and experience. So we know there isn’t a one-size fits all approach to entry criteria.

This guide should help clear things up for you, but we’re here to help you make sense of it if you want to talk it through. Our contact details are there at the end of the page.

It’s important to remember our entry criteria varies depending on whether you are joining an undergraduate or postgraduate course.

  • Undergraduate degrees – entry requirements for undergraduate degrees are typically expressed in terms of UCAS Tariff points, with some courses requesting grades in specific subject areas.
  • Postgraduate courses and PGCEs – entry requirements for master’s degrees and PGCEs usually ask for a degree which for some courses may need to be in a relevant subject area and/or at a minimum award classification.

Depending on what you’d like to study with us, additional criteria may apply.

Take a look at our course pages to see the entry requirements that apply to you.

If you’re looking to study an undergraduate course with us we have provided lots of information to help you on this page.

Different criteria and ways to apply often relate to our postgraduate courses. You can find out how to apply on specific postgraduate course pages and our Applying Directly to Edge Hill University page.

We have explained how to achieve selected totals of UCAS Tariff points from A-Levels, BTEC awards, T Levels and Access diplomas and outline the range of alternatives qualifications that we also accept.

UCAS tariff

To join a degree at Edge Hill University, you will typically need to achieve a certain number of UCAS Tariff points as all or part of the entry criteria.

The UCAS Tariff allocates points to a range of qualifications in university entry requirements.

We accept qualifications such as A and AS Levels, BTEC/OCR Nationals and Higher Nationals, BTEC QCF, T Levels, International/European/Welsh Baccalaureates, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificates, Access to HE Diplomas, NVQ Level 3 (alongside other recognised qualifications), Advanced Diplomas and Open University credits.

Example offers

Some typical examples of how you can achieve selected totals of UCAS Tariff points through the successful completion of A Levels, BTEC awards, T Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) and Access to higher education diplomas are detailed below.

To establish the number of UCAS Tariff points required for a specific degree, and to see if there are any additional requirements for your preferred course(s), you should refer to the individual course pages.

144 UCAS Tariff points
136 UCAS Tariff points
128 UCAS Tariff points
120 UCAS Tariff points
112 UCAS Tariff points
104 UCAS Tariff points

The above examples may differ from actual offers made. A combination of qualifications will usually be accepted.

As long as you have a minimum of two A Levels (or equivalent), there is no maximum number of qualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. This includes additional qualifications such as the Welsh Baccalaureate and Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE), AS Levels that haven’t been continued to A Level, and General Studies AS or A Level awards. No offers will be made solely on the basis of AS or equivalent awards.

Please note, as BTEC awards and T Levels are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction, some Tariff points scores cannot be matched precisely to BTEC qualifications. This means that if you are studying or hold a BTEC qualification or T Level, you need to refer to the offer conditions for the exact grades/Tariff score which needs to be achieved or exceeded for entry.

There are a number of alternative BTEC qualifications attracting different Tariff scores to those listed above. These include the BTEC National in Early Years (NCF) and BTEC Specialist (QCF).

For a comprehensive listing of the UCAS Tariff points you can obtain from these awards, as well as alternative qualifications, you should refer to the UCAS Tariff calculator.

Alternative Qualifications

In addition to A Levels, BTECs and Access to higher education diplomas, some of the other awards we accept include Irish Leaving Certificates, CACHE Qualifications and FETAC Qualifications. We also welcome Key Skills qualifications and the UCAS Tariff points for Key Skills will be counted towards the overall points score requirement.

EU and international students

EU students can get country-specific information about the University’s entry requirements and equivalent national qualifications at www.edgehill.ac.uk/eu.

International students should visit the International pages for country-specific entry criteria for overseas applicants, as well as information about English language requirements and visa advice.

GCSEs

In addition to UCAS Tariff points, you will typically be expected to offer a range of five GCSEs at Grade C or Grade 4 or above (or equivalent Level 2 qualifications) in different subjects.

GCSE English Language at Grade C or Grade 4 or above (or equivalent) is normally required. Level 2 Functional Skills English or Level 2 Literacy are also acceptable for most, but not all, degrees.

Some degrees also stipulate GCSE Mathematics and/or GCSE Science at minimum Grade C or Grade 4 (or equivalent).

Please see the individual course pages for details of GCSE requirements for specific programmes.

If you do not have the relevant GCSEs, Edge Hill University offers equivalency tests in English, Mathematics and Science.

Additional requirements

For some degrees there may be additional criteria, other than GCSEs, that you need to meet as well as achieving the set number of UCAS Tariff points.

This may include set grades or a specific number of points in a particular subject, clearance to work with children and/or vulnerable adults, and medical fitness to teach or practice.

Please see the individual course pages for details of additional requirements that apply to specific programmes.

Recognition of Prior Learning

It is your responsibility to make a claim for recognition of prior learning.
