If you are applying to Edge Hill University and don’t have the GCSEs or Level 2 qualifications required for entry onto your course, one of our equivalency programmes may be for you.
The equivalency programmes offer you the opportunity to demonstrate that you satisfy our entry requirements for GCSE English, GCSE Mathematics and GCSE Science at Grade C or Grade 4 or above for most of our programmes, excluding Medicine. They may not be suitable for apprenticeship programmes.
We offer two options for GCSE English, Mathematics and Science and Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy, tutor-led revision courses and exam only options.
Exam-only options are ideal if you feel that with some self-revision, you would be able to take one of our exams. We offer GCSE equivalency exams in English, Mathematics and Science or Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy. The exam only options will take place either on campus or at Holy Cross College & University Centre on selected dates throughout the year.
Tutor-led revision courses are delivered either face to face on campus or online (please see subject areas for more details), prior to sitting an exam on campus. These are more for you if you feel like you need more taught input before taking the exam.
If you are unsuccessful in passing any of our exams on the first instance you will have two further opportunities to resit at no extra cost.
The Edge Hill University Equivalency Exams are designed to meet the GCSE / Level 2 entry requirements for our degrees. Other providers do accept them. However, it is the responsibility of the applicant to check this.
Exam only options
After registering and paying for a exam, you will receive a revision pack to help you study at home and revise at your own pace. We recommend that you utilise a range of sources to support your revision.

Contact us
If you have any queries about equivalency exams, please get in touch with the team who will be happy to assist you.
The Equivalency Exams team are available Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. If you register for a exam outside these hours, we will be in touch when we return to the office.
Please read our disclaimer on our equivalency programmes
The equivalency courses and exams meet the GCSE and Level 2 entry criteria for Edge Hill University courses (excluding Medicine and some apprenticeship programmes) and do not necessarily hold any currency with other institutions. It is your responsibility to check that the equivalency courses and/or exams will be accepted for your target programme with us prior to registering.
You should allow a minimum of four weeks for papers to be marked.
You will be eligible to complete one exam (and two resits if unsuccessful) in each subject.
It is your responsibility to book onto and sit the equivalency exam(s) in a timely manner, allowing enough time for resits (if required) and to meet offer deadlines. This is typically 31 August prior to a September intake.
If English is not your first language, please note that in order to meet the assessment criteria for the English and Literacy exams, you must demonstrate a satisfactory level of English language proficiency.
A exam must be taken within twelve months of payment being made.
We update our exams on a regular basis to reflect current subject curriculums. If you need to complete resits and have been registered with us for more than two years before doing so, the curriculum content may have changed and your revision materials may not reflect this. We recommend that you contact the Equivalency Exams team for further details.
If you are unable to sit an exam on any of the published dates, there are allowances for mitigating circumstances. Should this situation occur, you should email the Equivalency Exams team for guidance.
The running of equivalency programmes is subject to sufficient numbers of students registering.
