Edge Hill University scoops two Green Tourism awards

October 17, 2023

Edge Hill University has won two Green Tourism Awards, recognising the success of sustainability measures adopted by Edge Hill Sport and its conferences service.

Green Tourism praised the many sustainability measures implemented because of the University’s commitment to becoming greener, including low energy lighting, water saving measures, increased recycling, and a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

This award comes shortly after Edge Hill was ranked as a Platinum Tier University in the annual Uswitch green university study; was identified as a Gold Tier wildlife-friendly university by Ark Wildlife; and received its 12th Green Flag award for its stunning campus grounds.

Corporate Sustainability Manager Keziah Stott said: “This is a fantastic achievement for our popular Sports Centre and conferences service, which thousands of people use every year.

“These awards reflect our huge strides towards being more sustainable, including recycling rates of over 50%, six years of zero waste to landfill and CO2e emissions down by 26% in 15 years.

“Although we have achieved a lot, we certainly won’t rest on our laurels. A new Environmental Sustainability Delivery Plan and committee are ensuring we are on track to meet our ambitious targets of being Carbon Neutral by 2030 and reaching Net Zero by 2035. At Edge Hill, sustainability will always be at the heart of what we do.”

Submissions for the Green Tourism Awards were written with the help of BSc (Hons) Business and Management students while they were on placement, learning how successful businesses operate.

The Green Tourism programme is funded by West Lancashire Borough Council, in collaboration with Green Business UK.   The programme supports eligible businesses and organisations to improve their environmental impact and contribute to the wider efforts in putting West Lancashire on the map as a sustainable tourist destination.

Cllr Adam Yates, Portfolio Holder for Green Growth, said: “We’re so pleased to have supported Edge Hill on their green journey to becoming more sustainable.

“Congratulations on their fantastic achievement, and to the students who dedicated their time and efforts in delivering the Green Tourism Programme as part of their university studies.”
