What is the Career Development Programme?

A circular diagram outlining the four stages of the career development cycle 'self-awareness', 'explore options', 'plan and decide' and 'take action'

As a student of Edge Hill University, you will follow the Edge Hill Career Development Programme. This has been designed around the principles of the DOTS model (Watts and Law, 2003) which will develop your skills in career decision making, opportunity awareness, self-awareness and making transitions.  The programme provides a structured framework so that you understand the careers support available at Edge Hill, develop your career ideas and plans, and can make informed decisions throughout your professional life.

The programme also helps you to navigate your way through our three stages of career readiness which are Discover, Develop and Compete.

How do I access the programme?

Our Careers team will support you through the programme via delivery of three in-curriculum sessions during each year of study and each session has clearly defined learning outcomes so that you know what will be included.

During the sessions you’ll be signposted to online pathways where you’ll be able to follow any activities and create your own reflections. You can use these pathways to continue your own career development outside of the taught sessions by accessing any recommended resources and sharing your progress in careers or personal tutor appointments.

If you’re a postgraduate student, you’ll follow the ‘Year 3’ programme, for which sessions will be tailored to your needs.

The image shows the titles of the nine sessions that make up the career development programme. There are three sessions per year of study.
