Work-related learning
Our history programme is designed to help you achieve your potential by training you in the skills valued by a wide range of employers. We do this as part of your historical study rather than separately from it.
From Year 1 you will be encouraged to think about your future career options. Our modules will train you in CV and cover letter writing and give you the opportunity to work with local heritage organisations. In Year 2 you will undertake work-related learning including the chance of a work placement or external project, giving you valuable experience in a work setting, as well as lots of evidence to support your career plans.
You will get to meet with our recent graduates and discuss your career options with them at our annual careers afternoon and you will be given the opportunity to volunteer for regional heritage organisations through our History Volunteering Fair.
We have a departmental work-related learning officer, Emma Liu, who is available to meet with students on a one-to-one basis to ensure that you have the opportunity for meaningful opportunities to work with external organisations. Emma also contributes to sessions on modules so that you know what’s going on. She says:
I aim to work closely with leading industry organisations and businesses to cultivate partnerships and enrichment opportunities such as placements, industry talks and other relevant activities. This will help you to further develop real world experiences to meet the ever-changing needs of industry graduate level positions and employers.
Emma Liu, Work-Related Learning Officer
Your transition into the job market will be further supported by our Careers Team and you will even get the chance to apply for a £2,000 award to support a career-enhancing project, through the University’s Student Opportunity Fund.
