On our part-time Primary Education degree, you will develop as a professional with all the qualities needed for a rewarding and challenging role nurturing young minds aged 5-11. This part-time initial teacher training programme is suitable for those who have experience of working in a school, such as higher level teaching assistants (HLTAs) or learning mentors. It is delivered almost entirely in school, with school-based tasks complemented by two study weeks of campus-based sessions per year and one evening campus-based or online session per fortnight during term time.

    You will gain practical experience and develop your own individual teaching personality and personal principles, along with the essential professional skills, knowledge and understanding required for a career in primary teaching. You will study in a dynamic teaching and learning environment where expert University and school-based colleagues work side by side to ensure that you have the best possible initial teacher training experience.     In Depth

    What will I study?

    You will study a range of modules which will fall into one of four strands:

    • Studentship – you will develop effective higher education study skills and take ownership of your own academic development. Exploring the significance of research in education and its impact on policy and practice, you will develop and carry out your own small-scale, practice-based research project;
    • Values in Education – you will consider the values that underpin primary education and consider historical, political and social influences. As you begin to develop your own personal values as a professional teacher you will consider how these might influence your approach to teaching and to leadership in education;
    • Professional Studies – you will spend a significant amount of time undertaking professional practice placements in key stages 1 and 2 in schools and other educational settings. Academic modules that connect directly to professional practice placements will support you in developing the skills, knowledge and understanding associated with meeting the Teachers’ Standards;
    • Curriculum – a range of varied curriculum modules will provide you with opportunities to develop essential subject knowledge across all subjects in the national curriculum for primary education. You will select a subject specialism to explore in more depth and further individualise your programme by selecting options for focused study. You will consider wider issues related to curriculum such as creativity, working beyond the classroom, and curriculum design.

    How will I study?

    When you join this part-time programme, you must be employed or volunteering for a minimum of one day per week in a primary school. Your head teacher must agree to support your progress with the degree for the duration of the course.

    Your learning experience will include lectures, seminars, workshop sessions and tutorials delivered using a hybrid blend of in-person and online teaching. Independent study will be supported by materials provided through the virtual learning environment using a range of online teaching tools and applications.

    University-based sessions will be planned for two weeks a year. The study weeks will be from Monday to Friday and are typically in September and July. In addition, you will also attend sessions in the evening approximately once every two weeks during term time. These may be delivered on campus or online. You will also engage with a series of online and school-based tasks as part of each module. Your university-based experiences will be underpinned by reference to current research with some modules giving you the opportunity to engage with your tutors’ current research interests and projects.

    You will undertake formally assessed professional practices in your own setting in preparation for a final professional practice in an alternative school. During these experiences you will have opportunities to observe the work of expert practitioners. You will reflect on and discuss this practice with those practitioners and your trained school-based mentor. As you take on increasing responsibilities for children’s learning and development, you will start by working with small groups under the direction of the class teacher and progress to planning for and working with the whole class for significant periods of time, managing the learning of every child.

    How will I be assessed?

    Assessment strategies will include submitting portfolios of school-based work, written assignments, in-class tests, poster presentations, and group and individual oral presentations.

    During professional practice your school-based mentor will assess your development through reflective conversations, reviewing and discussing your planning and assessment records, observing your teaching, and gathering the perspectives of other adults and of the children who work with you.

    In all cases, you will be given clear assessment guidance. The assessment criteria will be shared with you and you will be given constructive feedback to help you to set targets and identify actions to help you make further progress.

    You will compile an electronic portfolio throughout your degree that builds to become a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your professional development and your ability to meet the Teachers’ Standards.

    There are no formal written examinations as part of the current assessment methods on this programme.

    Who will be teaching me?

    You will be taught by a range of highly qualified and experienced teachers and tutors who are dedicated to excellence in primary education and who will model high quality practice to enable you to develop your own teaching style.

    You will be supported throughout your programme by a personal academic tutor who will help you to manage your workload, engage with your academic studies, prepare for professional practice placements and secure your first teaching post.

    A Great Study Environment

    Throughout the programme, you will be supported in school by an Edge Hill University Partnership Trainer and also by an Edge Hill University Personal Tutor to ensure that you have a training experience that is tailored towards your individual needs. This will build strong links between theory and practice, so that you can apply pedagogical knowledge in the classroom and reflect upon it immediately.

    You will be trained in at least two of our partner schools (one of which will be your host school), so that you have contrasting experiences of educational settings and you will be encouraged to reflect upon such differences.

    Part-time students will study level 4 modules in all of Year 1 and the first trimester of Year 2.

    PED1019Transition into Higher Education (20 credits)

    Transition into Higher Education will help you to find your feet as an undergraduate student teacher. Your tutors will help you to secure the foundational skills that will ensure you are successful in your studies – identifying and using appropriate and reliable sources; effective reading and note-making; and planning, drafting, editing and proofreading skills for academic writing. You will consider how you might manage a demanding workload while identifying and developing positive personal mental health and wellbeing strategies. Teaching is a complex and highly skilled profession; even as a student teacher you will need to exercise sound judgement, articulate your own developing philosophy and make principled decisions about teaching and learning. This module will begin to prepare you for the rewards and challenges, both personal and professional, of teaching in the 21st century classroom.

    PED1020Children and Childhood (20 credits)

    Children and Childhood will guide you to consider your own perceptions of children, childhood, families and children’s communities, and the factors that have influenced these perceptions. You will examine a range of cultural and international perspectives and will reflect on how and why current values have become embedded and are realised in practice. For example, you might consider images of childhood in the media and their impact on children’s experiences; children’s rights as individuals, as citizens and as active members of their communities; children’s social and cultural identities; risk and risky play; and the common challenges of childhood.

    PED1021Teaching, Learning and Child Development (20 credits)

    Teaching, Learning and Child Development links directly with your first professional practice placement in school. In university-based sessions you will begin to develop your understanding of the complexity of primary teaching and the professional roles and responsibilities of a primary teacher. You will consider children’s social and emotional development; positive approaches to classroom behaviour management; contemporary theories of learning; basic principles for planning, teaching and assessment; and schools as communities of learners. During your professional practice, you will work with school-based colleagues to begin to put these into practice and to build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your ongoing professional development. You will observe lessons, plan well-structured small group and whole class activities, and reflect on your development as a student teacher, setting targets and action planning accordingly.

    PED1022Introduction to Primary English, Mathematics and Science (20 credits)

    Introduction to Primary English, Mathematics and Science broadly focuses on the creative and performing arts but also engages you with the importance of physical and mental health and children’s personal, social and emotional development. As in the other curriculum modules, you will work with specialist tutors who are passionate about their subject. The practical teaching workshops in the curriculum modules provide you with opportunities to experience subjects from a learner’s perspective.     PED1023Introduction to Primary Computing, History, Geography, RE and Languages (20 credits)

    Introduction to Primary Computing, History, Geography, RE and Languages broadly considers the humanities subjects and explores subject-specific approaches to teaching, resourcing and classroom management. Tutors will ensure that you experience and reflect on approaches to learning that take children outside the classroom, for example fieldwork, visiting museums and places of worship, and using the local environment, historical maps and other artefacts.

    PED1024Introduction to Primary Music, Art, DT, PE and PSHE (20 credits)

    Introduction to Primary Music, Art, DT, PE and PSHE broadly focuses on the creative and performing arts but also engages you with the importance of physical and mental health and children’s personal, social and emotional development.     Understanding Educational Research enhances your academic skills as you continue to develop as a scholar of primary education. You will explore the significance, implications and impact of educational research in relation to practice in primary education and you will be introduced to the research process. You will develop a research proposal for a small-scale research project that you may use in your final year.

    PED2024Schools, Schooling and Curriculum: Values in Education (20 credits)

    Schools, Schooling and Curriculum: Values in Education introduces you to historical perspectives on the values underpinning current policy and practice in primary education. You will critically analyse values that are commonly assumed to be fixed and immovable and develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise and challenge injustice and inequality in your advocacy for children.

    PED2025Diversity and Inclusion in Primary Education (20 credits)

    Diversity and Inclusion in Primary Education enables you to learn about inclusion and diversity in the school context and how it is affected by societal factors. You will ponder legal and ethical considerations and begin to understand your role as an educator in providing inclusive education and attempting to establish greater equality between differing groups. The module will encourage you to reflect on how you can create the conditions necessary for stakeholders to support the education of children effectively. You will undertake a developmental professional practice placement as part of this module to gain first-hand experience of inclusive education and practical approaches to valuing diversity in the classroom. You will add to the electronic portfolio that you started in your initial professional practice and use it to demonstrate your ongoing professional development.

    PED2026Bringing the Curriculum Together (20 credits)

    Bringing the Curriculum Together considers how subjects can enhance and complement each other. This module will further develop your subject knowledge across all curriculum areas and ask you to consider how a broad, rich and holistic curriculum can be achieved. You will gain understanding of the value of a rich curriculum that supports children’s social, physical, moral, spiritual, cultural and aesthetic development. You will be introduced to cross-curricular and thematic planning through the modelling of approaches in lectures, seminars and workshops and begin to consolidate your personal philosophies of education through university-based sessions and reflection on your professional practice.

    PED2027Beyond the National Curriculum: Beyond the Classroom (20 credits)

    Beyond the National Curriculum: Beyond the Classroom considers approaches to teaching and learning that go beyond the English national curriculum, as well as examining the impact and value of taking learning into alternative educational settings. Schools are increasingly taking control of their own curricula and considering alternative approaches to supporting children’s social, emotional, physical, cognitive and spiritual development. The module provides you with experience of some of these approaches, such as Philosophy for Children, and provides opportunities to reflect on how you might include them in your own developing practice as a student primary teacher.

    PED2028Focused Subject Study (20 credits)

    Focused Subject Study will support you in selecting one ‘subject’ from the current national curriculum (Department for Education, 2014) to explore in more depth. Using your own subject experiences and perceptions as a starting point, you will consider the ‘identity’ of the subject, including the associated knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and values. You will consider the impact of your own experiences, associated perceptions and biases on your ‘intent’ for the subject as a novice subject leader. This deeper, wider knowledge will contribute towards your ability to affect appropriate change in, and have a positive impact on, the curriculum in your chosen specialism as a subject leader.

    Part-time students will study level 6 modules in the third trimester of Year 3 and all of Year 4.

    PED3019The Research Project (20 credits)

    The Research Project enhances your understanding of practice-based research through planning, implementing and presenting a small-scale, practice-based research project. You will develop critical and analytical skills in reviewing both literature and research methodology in education. Drawing on your subject knowledge and understanding, as well as your school-based experiences from the programme, you will identify a specific focus and research question to explore. This project will enable you to demonstrate your ability to conceptualise, problematise, plan, organise and make ethical judgements in the creation of a research study set within a short timeframe. The module will also enhance your employability by giving you an additional specialist focus to offer to an employing school and serve as a useful foundation for postgraduate study.

    PED3020Values for Leadership (20 credits)

    Values for Leadership enables you to consider your own potential for leadership. The module will explore how you can influence and effect change in the culture, values, curriculum, policy and practice of primary education as a student teacher, newly qualified teacher (NQT) in your first post, recently qualified teacher (RQT), or as an educational specialist in other settings. You will consider models for school improvement and innovation and examine research-informed development in your chosen primary curriculum specialism. You will continue to develop as a practitioner who has sophisticated and robust opinions, derived  from engagement with leading theories, policies and practice, about how your chosen primary curriculum specialism should be taught, assessed and experienced by children.

    PED3021Preparing for Employment: The Reflective Practitioner (20 credits)

    Preparing for Employment: The Reflective Practitioner encourages consideration of the importance of reflective practice for continuing professional development. You will evaluate how working with other adults secures positive outcomes for all children and reflect on your own employability. The module involves a final, consolidatory professional practice placement as you reflect on your continuing professional development and prepare for your Newly Qualified Teacher induction and engagement with the Early Career Framework (Department for Education, 2019). You will add to your electronic portfolio that will become a body of evidence that demonstrates your ongoing professional development and your ability to meet the Teaching Standards.

    PED3022Approaches to Curriculum Design (20 credits)

    Approaches to Curriculum Design asks you to consider national and international approaches to curriculum design, exploring historical, social and political influences and the impact of theory and research on curriculum design and policy. Recognising that curriculum is in a constant state of change, the module will examine how you might influence curriculum design locally in your own professional contexts. Recognising that curricula are in a constant state of change, the module will equip you with research-informed knowledge and theory-informed insights so that you understand the elements involved in curriculum design. This will give you the confidence to contribute to curriculum change and innovation in your school.

    PED3023Creativity and Curriculum (20 credits)

    Creativity and Curriculum explores definitions of creativity and notions of creative approaches to teaching. You will examine historical and contemporary definitions of creativity and begin to consider your own professional position in relation to creativity and how it might impact your practice. The module will encourage you to engage with fundamental questions in relation to the aims, values and outcomes of education. You will consider how creativity might be assessed, for example, and whether this is in fact appropriate. Exploring creativity across the whole of the primary curriculum, you will examine how a curriculum based on principles of creativity can promote inclusion, celebrate diversity and challenge bias and stereotypes.

    PED3024Elective Special Study (20 credits)

    Elective Special Study enables you to tailor your degree to pursue areas of relevant personal interest and/or new aspects of research or practice. You will be offered a suite of options for potential topics. This module will enhance your professional CV and provide you with resources on which to draw during interview for your first teaching post.

    Timetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You will be provided with a live timetable at the start of the year that lists your two study weeks and in-person sessions, with specific days for the twilight sessions, online activities and school-based tasks.

    Entry Requirements

    Typical offer 96 UCAS Tariff points, for which no specific subjects are required, plus GCSE English Language, Mathematics and Science at Grade C or Grade 4 or above (or equivalent).

    You are expected to have a commitment to, and understanding of, primary education, demonstrating the personal attributes, values and motivation required to train as a teacher.

    You should also be able to demonstrate a commitment to ongoing part-time experience in the role of the teaching assistant or learning mentor (voluntary or paid), equivalent to a minimum of one day a week for the school year for the duration of the programme with the approval of the Head Teacher (and their commitment to support your progress).

    Please note, for the purposes of initial teacher training, level 2 literacy and numeracy qualifications are not considered as equivalent to GCSE Grade C or Grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics.

    An interview forms part of the selection process. The admissions panel will prioritise for interview those with the greatest strengths in relation to:

    • Experience of working with children in a primary school setting;
    • Knowledge of the Primary National Curriculum;
    • Personal and presentational qualities as well as the use of spoken and written English;
    • Intellectual and academic ability, supported by a recent academic reference.

    If you accept a formal offer from Edge Hill University you will be required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure indicating that you meet the mandatory criteria of ‘Clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults’. Further information will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.

    Some examples of how you can achieve 96 UCAS Tariff points are detailed below.

    • A Level: CCC;
    • BTEC Extended Diploma (or combination of BTEC QCF qualifications): Merit, Merit, Merit (MMM);
    • International Baccalaureate (IB): We are happy to accept IB qualifications which achieve the required number of UCAS Tariff points;
    • Access to Higher Education Diploma: 45 credits at Level 3, for example 45 credits at Merit. The required total can be attained from various credit combinations.

    Please note, the above examples may differ from actual offers made. A combination of A Level and BTEC awards may also be accepted.

    As long as you have a minimum of two A Levels (or equivalent), there is no maximum number of qualifications that we will accept UCAS points from. This includes additional qualifications such as the Welsh Baccalaureate and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), AS Levels that haven’t been continued to A Level, and General Studies AS or A Level awards.

    Are there any alternative ways to meet the entry requirements?

    If you have the ability to study for a degree but lack the necessary qualifications or confidence, our Fastrack: Preparation for Higher Education course could be for you. This free, seven-week programme provides a great opportunity to enhance your study skills and subject knowledge and demonstrate that you are ready to study a particular subject with us, in lieu of achieving the UCAS Tariff points in the entry criteria.

    Upon successful completion of a Fastrack course, you will be well placed to progress onto a corresponding Edge Hill University degree, although additional entry requirements may apply and the availability of specific programmes cannot be guaranteed.     Recognition of Prior Learning

    Career Prospects

    What are my career prospects?

    This degree is accredited by the Department for Education. Successful completion of the programme will enable you to gain recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

    Our graduates obtain work in schools across the UK and abroad and we offer excellent support to help you gain a first post as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT). The programme will prepare you to teach in key stages 1 and 2 in primary schools and support you in developing strong subject knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of primary education.

    Before the end of your degree, you will need to complete a Career Entry and Development Profile (CEDP) which acts as a useful bridge between your initial teacher training programme and your induction year as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT).

    Finance

    Tuition Fees

    If you are a prospective UK student who will be joining this undergraduate degree on a part-time basis in academic year 2021/22, the tuition fee will be £77 per credit, i.e. £1,540 per 20 credit module (subject to final Government approval). 360 credits are required to complete an undergraduate degree.

    EU students who have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, as well as Irish nationals, may be eligible for the UK part-time tuition fee rate.

    The University may administer a small inflationary rise in tuition fees, in line with Government policy, in subsequent academic years as you progress through the course.

    Financial Support

    Subject to eligibility, UK students joining this undergraduate degree can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees. UK students enrolling on the programme may also be eligible to apply for additional funding to help with living costs.

    18th July 2019 - Change to Entry Requirements

    Professional Skills Tests have been removed from the entry criteria for September 2020 entry onwards. Details of the replacement for the tests are still to be announced, however they will be benchmarked against a defined set of English and Mathematics skills that students will be expected to have by the end of the course (rather than at the point of entry).

    The Professional Skills Tests remain part of the entry requirements for September 2019 entry in line with Government policy.

    Delivery for the academic year 2020/21 will consist of a combination of face-to-face teaching on campus (delivered accumulatively, where appropriate) supported by professional practice and online learning. Online study will include synchronous (seminar, tutorial) and asynchronous (lecture, discussion board, other) learning activities and academic support.
