    This MBA has been designed for those ready to make the leap into management roles from an existing job and those who are aspiring to become managers. This course will have a particular focus on the marketing discipline and help you develop the skills needed to contribute to strategic marketing decision making.

    Importantly, we take a strategic perspective on business and management and help you to develop the skills to contribute to major decisions made by organisations about their future.

    Applicants are welcomed from any discipline and from a wide range of job roles. Many entrants to an MBA have a science or technology qualification and so it is not necessary that you have studied business or management before.

    What will I study?

    The MBA is designed to allow you to develop an understanding of the key aspects of business and management. You will study topics relating to accounting and finance, human resource management, marketing and strategy. By the end of these modules you will have an understanding of these critical aspects of business. Those who major in Marketing will also study brand management.

    Teaching is set within an international context with examples and illustrations being drawn from the global economy. The course will also take a strategic focus, concentrating on the major decisions that organisations have to make to determine their overall direction. Finally, you will be exposed to a range of contemporary issues that are of interest to all managers. These will include such things as globalisation; ethics; and social responsibility.

    How will I study?

    As well as preparing for and attending lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops, you will spend time reading and completing coursework, including written assignments, portfolios and presentations. Learning from your colleagues is an important part of the course and many exercises will require you to work in teams.

    How will I be assessed?

    Throughout the programme, there is a combination of different forms of assessment to test intellectual development, vocational capability, and critical thinking. Coursework often involves both individual and group-based working and utilises case studies and problem solving exercises. Examinations take a variety of forms, using both seen and unseen questions.

    Who will be teaching me?

    All of our staff are passionate about student learning and development. The MBA is delivered by specialists in marketing and experts in accountancy, human resource management, e-commerce and small and medium sized enterprises among others. The team includes active researchers who publish in academic journals, as well as academically and professionally qualified staff. All team members are people with an energy and enthusiasm for their subject area.

    BUS4031Strategic Marketing Planning (20 credits)

    Strategic Marketing Planning is designed to provide you with an understanding of marketing planning including the synerginistic planning process and its links with the delivery of effective and sustainable competitive advantage. Effective marketing strategy and planning is essential for all organisations. The module considers the complexities of the marketing environment and the impact this has on the creation of marketing plans and their successful implementation and execution. This will enable you to contribute along with other directors and senior managers to an organisation’s competitive strategy.

    BUS4033Strategic Brand Management (20 credits)

    Strategic Brand Management considers the central role of branding for today’s marketers, with particular emphasis on creating and managing brands in order to build customer value and brand equity and the role of branding as part of an organisation’s marketing strategy. You will engage with a range of critical debates surrounding the concepts, theories and role of branding from both customer and organisational perspectives.

    BUS4038Strategy: Foundations and New Perspectives (20 credits)

    Strategy: Foundations and New Perspectives provides a critical, reflective and evaluative examination of historic and contemporary debates relating to business strategy and strategic planning. The module focuses on the decision-making process with regard to strategy formulation and implementation and contextualises and evaluates the process through examination of business approaches and practices. You will develop the ability to formulate and implement strategy in order to maximise organisational effectiveness and business performance. In addition, you will be encouraged to evaluate the impact and influence of sometimes complex strategic decisions and actions on a range of organisational stakeholders.

    BUS4039Human Resourcing as Competitive Strategy (20 credits)

    Human Resourcing as Competitive Strategy recognises that the effective management of people is of fundamental importance to any organisation, as is a coherent, well-thought-through company strategy.  An increasing number of organisations are recognising the need for strategically integrated people management policies that inform all major decisions. This change requires greater strategic awareness from Human Resources (HR) managers. Indeed, the UK HR professional body, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has encouraged all HR professionals to be cognisant of their role in the effective achievement of organisational strategy. This module will enhance your knowledge of, and competence in, strategic human resource management to help you meet increasing demands for a strategically sensitive approach to people management.

    BUS4040Financial Decision Making (20 credits)

    Financial Decision Making  briefly reviews the main financial information produced by organisations, before moving on and focusing on how this information can be used by managers. The module provides a platform for managers, developing from basic financial systems to evaluating financial information and its uses in making decisions. The module will allow you to reflect on some of the current critical debates about the role and positioning of financial information in organisations; being able to place financial information and decision-making in the wider context of organisations and their roles in society.

    BUS4519Dissertation (60 credits)

    Dissertation requires you to undertake a piece of independent research based upon, or linked to, a specific topic or issue related to a relevant organisational or management development matter. You will provide a theoretical rationale for the dissertation, collect and organise research data, present it within a coherent, rigorous and analytical framework, and reach a well-argued and integrated conclusion.

    BUS4522Organisational Research (20 credits)

    Organisational Research develops your skills and awareness in research methodologies and techniques that are specifically appropriate for undertaking, analysing and writing-up academic research in the form of a dissertation or practitioner/consultancy research. You will be encouraged to explore a wide range of methodologies and develop the necessary conceptual, methodological, practical and ethical skills necessary for management studies research.

    Entry Criteria

    Entry Requirements

    You should have a degree equivalent to UK first-class or second-class honours (2:2 or above). No specific subjects are required.

    Ideally you should also have two years of relevant work experience gained after graduation although well qualified and motivated candidates without this will be considered.

    English Language Requirements

    International students require IELTS 6.5, with a score no lower than 6.0 in each individual component, or an equivalent English language qualification.

    If your current level of English is half a band lower, either overall or in one or two elements, you may want to consider our Pre-Sessional English course.

    Edge Hill University recognises learning gained elsewhere, whether through academic credit and qualifications acquired from other relevant courses of study or through recognition of an individual’s professional and employment experience (also referred to as ‘experiential learning’). This may include credit or learning undertaken at another university.

    What are my career prospects?

    An MBA helps to equip you for a range of career opportunities in both general management and specialist functions. Typical MBA careers include accountancy, administration, banking, education, finance, human resource management, marketing, public and private sector management, retailing and enterprise.

    Tuition Fees

    Tuition fees for full-time study on this MBA are £11,160 for UK students and £14,050 for international students enrolling on the programme in academic year 2021/22. Exemptions apply for EU students who have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, as well as Irish nationals, who may be eligible for the UK full-time tuition fee rate.

    Tuition fees for part-time study on this MBA are £62 per credit for UK students enrolling on the programme in academic year 2021/22, i.e. £1,240 per 20 credit module. 180 credits are required to complete an MBA. EU students who have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, as well as Irish nationals, may be eligible for the UK part-time tuition fee rate.

    The University may administer a small inflationary rise in part-time postgraduate tuition fees in subsequent academic years as you progress through the course.
