LLB (Hons) Law with Politics course preparation
To help you feel confident and ready to begin your LLB (Hons) Law with Politics studies, we’ve put together everything you need to start preparing. Below you will find key department contacts, where you’ll be learning, useful resources and practical tips to help you make a smooth transition to university. Read on to find what’s waiting for you.
Where your learning will take place:
You’ll be based in the Law & Psychology building which provides contemporary teaching and learning facilities for students in the School of Law and Criminal Justice. In this building, you’ll find:
- a 250-seat lecture theatre
- mock court room and law clinic
- seminar and tutorial rooms
- social learning areas
You’ll also be encouraged to put what you learn into practice in our mock moot court room. As well as having the opportunity to provide free law advice in our on-campus law clinic.
Prepare for university
In the School of Law and Criminal Justice, you’ll develop the core attributes of our CARE+ model: critical thinking, adaptability, resilience, entrepreneurship and technological literacy. These skills will help you thrive at university and prepare for your future career.
- Critical thinking – you’ll learn how to analyse information, evaluate evidence and construct well-reasoned arguments. Whether you’re studying legal cases, criminal justice policy or contemporary debates, you’ll be encouraged to question assumptions and develop your own informed views.
- Adaptability – the legal and criminal justice sectors are constantly evolving. Being open to new ideas, experiences and feedback will help you settle into university life and make the most of every opportunity.
- Resilience – studying for a degree can be challenging at times. Resilience is about learning from setbacks, staying positive and persevering when things don’t go to plan. Remember, support is always available, so don’t hesitate to speak to your tutors if you need guidance.
- Entrepreneurship – this is about being proactive, curious and willing to take initiative. You can begin developing this skill by getting involved in new activities, volunteering, joining societies or seeking opportunities to broaden your experience.
- Technological literacy – technology is transforming the legal and criminal justice professions. You’ll develop the confidence to engage with digital tools and emerging technologies, using them responsibly, ethically and effectively.
Don’t worry if you’re still developing these skills. University is the perfect place to build them. Arrive with an open mind, be prepared to contribute to discussions, ask questions when you need support, and make the most of the opportunities available to you.

Your Timetable
Available from 3rd August
You will receive full timetable information from your department during Induction Week.
Ahead of this you can access the provisional course timetable on Student Calendar. You will need to select Courses from the drop-down menu, search for your course in the Resource(s) box and find the year one timetable from the list. Then just use the arrows to scroll forward to your course start date.
If you are going to be studying part-time with us, please look at the individual module timetables according to your planned curriculum.

Making friends
Starting somewhere new can feel daunting and that is completely normal. Once you arrive, you’ll be able to find out what activities and clubs/societies are available for you to get involved with. These are the perfect way to meet like-minded individuals who share your passions. Make sure to use our Students Life portal keep up to date with all the student events happening at Edge Hill.

- BBC Newscast. Weekly political discussions on the latest affairs.
- Parliament Live. Watch Parliamentary sessions (including Prime Minister’s questions) live or view recordings. Available on iPlayer or YouTube.
Materials you may need:
As a law student, you’ll be provided with free access to Law Trove. This is an online resource which gives you access to all of your textbooks and additional readings for your modules. So there’s no need to buy any textbooks. You will be given full training on how to use Law Trove and you’ll also be able to access hard copies in the library. But there are a few other things you may want to consider.
- Academic diary – a staple to help you with your time management as well as upcoming tasks in both your academic and personal life.
- Notepads and pens – some people prefer to do this digitally rather than on paper, whichever you prefer, make sure you have the resources to complete any notes you’d like to take. If you like to write on a physical notepad, consider an A5 size so that it’s easier to carry around.
And of course, anything else that you like to use for your academic studies, like highlighters, flashcards and folders.
