The 21-year old’s path at Edge Hill University has been defined by his proactive approach to community building. Not only has he served as secretary for the Christian Union but also become the President the University’s British Sign Language Society.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the Edge Hill community and his work championing equal opportunity, Ruben was awarded a University Scholarship. Reflecting on his journey and the impact of the award, Ruben from Manchester, said:
“I am very proud to have won this scholarship. I was nominated for my passion for volunteering, mainly in relation to working with children and young people with disabilities. I am a disabled student and identify as LGBTQ+ so I try to be mindful of those who can feel overlooked or excluded.”
Rubens decision to study Primary Early Years Education with QTS at Edge Hill was influenced by the University’s long-standing reputation for excellent teacher training. As a student who identifies as both disabled and LGBTQ+, he credits the supportive environment within the Faculty of Education for helping him cultivate the confidence required to succeed in a demanding field.

“I was particularly drawn to the emphasis on both academic learning and professional practice, which has helped me grow in confidence and prepare for a future career in education.”
For Ruben, the classroom is more than just a place to study; it is an environment where he has learned to embrace his own identity to better support others.
“As a deaf student, my journey at Edge Hill has shaped not only my academic development but also my identity as an advocate for inclusion.
“Navigating both study and placement have strengthened my resilience and deepened my understanding of what it means to truly listen and support others.
“These experiences have driven my commitment to creating environments where every child and every student feels seen, heard and valued.”
Looking toward graduation, Ruben is focused on the tangible impact he can make in the lives of his future pupils.
“I hope to pursue a career working with children and young people, where I can make a meaningful difference through inclusive and supportive practice. I am particularly passionate about advocacy within education, ensuring that all children feel valued and able to succeed. My degree has also helped me develop resilience, confidence and professionalism, which I hope to continue building on in my future career.”
