Studying abroad during your degree can significantly enrich your academic studies. You’ll be able to explore a new country, immerse yourself in the local culture, and experience being part of an internationally diverse academic community. It’s also a great way to discover new strengths and ambitions which will set you apart when you graduate.
There are many benefits to spending time studying overseas, whether you’re looking to spend a year or just a semester abroad. It is also possible to take part in short trips overseas or over the summer independent of your studies.
Learn something new about yourself during what could be one of the most rewarding and unforgettable experiences of your life.

If you are interested in studying abroad, you should start seeking and applying for opportunities from around 12 months in advance.
Opportunities to study abroad are mostly department- and subject-specific, and are only on offer with our partner universities advertised on our Global Opportunities page. You should enquire with your department and personal tutor to find out about options available before submitting an application.
Some subject areas may require an interview or additional application support. You will also need to provide an academic reference, included with your application.

There are a few different costs to think about before studying abroad and some of these costs will depend on where you are going and how long for. Ensuring to look at the general cost of living in different countries can help you to decide where you would like to consider studying.
When applying for a Study Abroad programme, you’ll need to be able to cover the costs of your travel, accommodation, insurance and living costs. In some cases as well, if you need a visa to go to the country you are planning to study in then there may be a minimum financial requirement that you must be able to demonstrate access to in order to satisfy the visa terms.
Most students will use a mixture of their Student Finance England (SFE) Maintenance loan (or equivalent), any support grant funding and/or any income or savings they have to support this.
Most of our undergraduate and integrated Masters courses offer the opportunity to spend an additional year studying abroad. This is based on completion of two years of your course. You’ll then return to university to complete your final fourth year. Alternatively, some courses offer the option to spend a single semester abroad during the second year of your studies.
You’ll also need to be of good academic standing, demonstrating good engagement on your course and signed off to go by your department. We’ll contact your department directly to confirm this after you have applied.
Classes at most host institutions will be in English, meaning you don’t need to speak a foreign language to study there. However, it’s still a great opportunity to develop your language and communication skills, outside of the classroom.
