I have learned to recognise children as capable individuals, and that continues to inspire my work every day.

I chose to study at Edge Hill University after visiting the campus with my college. I immediately felt drawn to the calm, welcoming environment, which felt well-suited to focused learning. The facilities, particularly the library, stood out as supportive spaces for independent study, and I felt confident it was the right place for me.

My decision to study Early Childhood Studies was inspired by my experience studying childcare at college. I particularly enjoyed my placement, where I worked directly with young children and observed their development first-hand. This experience made me realise how important the early years are and confirmed my passion for working in this field. I wanted to deepen my understanding of child development and explore the theories that underpin effective practice, which made university the natural next step.

During my time at Edge Hill, one of the aspects I valued most was the support provided by my lecturers. I initially worried I would be expected to manage everything independently, but the academic staff were approachable and always willing to help. I found this especially important when I struggled with Harvard referencing at the beginning of my course. With guidance and helpful resources, I gradually built my confidence and developed a strong understanding of academic writing.

Completing my dissertation was another highlight. I was supported by a supervisor who provided constructive feedback and encouragement throughout, which strengthened both my academic skills and confidence. I also accessed the student referencing service, which helped me refine my work and improve my understanding of referencing.

My degree provided me with a strong foundation in child development, safeguarding and the social factors that impact children’s lives. It has also supported my progression into further study, and I hope to qualify as a social worker within the next two years.

The top three skills I developed during my studies were confidence, listening skills and teamwork. I became more confident in expressing my ideas through presentations and seminars, which supported my personal and professional growth. My listening skills improved through engaging with lectures and reflecting on key concepts. In addition, group work helped me develop teamwork skills, teaching me the importance of communication and collaboration.

One of the highlights of my time at university was graduating with First Class honours. This was a proud moment that reflected my hard work and continues to motivate me as I progress in my career.
I currently work as a childcare practitioner, supporting children aged 0–5. My role involves creating a safe, nurturing environment where young children can learn, develop and feel valued during these crucial early years.

A typical day in my job includes working closely with children to support their learning and development through play-based activities. I focus on encouraging their social, emotional and communication skills, while ensuring their wellbeing and safety at all times. Every day is different, and it is incredibly rewarding to see children grow in confidence and independence, even through the smallest achievements.

Studying Early Childhood Studies has shaped both my knowledge and my approach to practice. One key concept that has influenced me is viewing children as competent learners. This has changed how I interact with children, ensuring I respect their voices, recognise their capabilities and support their independence. I see this reflected in everyday moments, such as children learning to pronounce my name, Merveille, through consistent interaction. Experiences like this reinforce how capable young children are and continue to inspire my work.

Edge Hill also supported my future aspirations through the Careers team, where I explored postgraduate study options and developed a clear plan to pursue a Master’s in Social Work.

For anyone considering studying Early Childhood Studies at Edge Hill, my advice would be to approach the course with a positive mindset and believe in your ability to succeed. Make use of the support available, stay engaged with your learning, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Most importantly, enjoy the experience and be proud of your achievements.
