Starting university doesn’t just mean starting lectures -there’s also plenty of exciting opportunities to get involved in away from your course.

Edge Hill’s societies are just one of the ways you can meet people and spend time doing something you enjoy while feeling part of a thriving student community on campus.

Edge Hill Students’ Union supports more than 100 student-led societies, giving you plenty of ways to get involved. Societies enable you to meet people who share your interests and try something new. They are run by students, so you can have an input and help shape your group now and in the future.

Explore what interests you

Societies cover a wide range of interests, from academic subjects and culture to music and creative activities. They include groups like the Criminology and Social Sciences Society, the African and Caribbean Society and the EHSU Music Society.

The Students’ Union also has societies focused on British Sign Language, esports, books and board games. There’s no need to have any experience of a particular activity. You might simply be curious and want to give it a try. You never know, it could become a new passion.

Joining a society gives you a reason to step away from your usual study routine and spend time with people outside your course. It can be a place to make friends and enjoy a shared interest, while also giving you the chance to build confidence and settle in at university. You can gain experience of organising activities and working with others too, skills that can be useful during your studies and beyond.

Share experiences

No matter what your background or reason for coming to university, meeting people with similar experiences can make your experience even better and there’s plenty of societies and clubs to help you find your people. Like the EHSU Mature Students Society – a student-led group intended to bring mature students together, helping them meet new friends and build connections alongside their studies. Or the Global Café that connects students from all over the world giving them the opportunity to share their cultures and experiences of being an international student.

More ways to get involved

If you can’t find a society that reflects your interests, you can apply to start your own. The team can guide you through forming a committee, explaining your idea and completing an application.

Edge Hill also offers activities through Campus Sport – where you can play for fun or represent the University through becoming a part of Team Edge Hill which brings together students competing in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS).

When you join Edge Hill as a student, you’re automatically enrolled as a member of the Students’ Union. You’ll need to activate your Students’ Union account before joining a society, then you can explore everything that we have to offer and join any that suit your interests.
