Packing for university can feel overwhelming, especially when you are preparing to move into a new home away from home. Alongside the obvious essentials, there are several practical items that are easy to overlook but can make student life more comfortable, organised and enjoyable.
To help you prepare, we’ve put together a list of often-forgotten essentials that you may be glad to have packed once you settle in.
Before You Pack
Appliances
Before moving in, check which appliances are already provided in your university accommodation, such as a kettle or microwave. If they are not included, speak to your flatmates about buying them together and agree that everyone will contribute fairly. You can find your future flatmates using CampusConnect, our online community designed to help you connect with other students.
Extension Lead
With multiple appliances, chargers and electronic devices competing for limited sockets, it is easy to run out of space in your university room. Packing an extension lead gives you extra flexibility and means you can charge your phone, laptop and other essentials without constantly unplugging something else. Position it neatly under your desk or beside your bed to help keep cables organised and reduce the risk of creating a trip hazard. It can also make it easier to work or relax in different parts of your room without being restricted by the location of the nearest socket.
Storing Important Documents
Important documents can easily be misplaced while you are settling into university, so it is worth keeping them together in a secure and clearly organised folder. Store items such as your passport, National Insurance details and bank statements in one safe place, making them easy to find whenever you need them.Arrange the documents in a way that works for you, whether alphabetically, by type or in date order. Keep the folder somewhere private and inaccessible to others. This simple step can save you time, reduce stress and help protect your personal information.

USB Drive and Cloud Storage
A USB drive can be a valuable university essential, giving you a convenient way to back up important assignments, presentations and study materials. If your laptop crashes or displays the dreaded blue screen, you will have a copy of your work available and will not need to worry about losing everything. For added protection, save your files to a reliable cloud storage service too. Using both a USB drive and cloud backup means your work is protected if your device is lost, damaged or stops working. Remember to update your backups regularly, particularly before submitting an important assignment to provide reassurance.
Shoe Rack
A shoe rack is a simple but useful addition to your university room, particularly when you are sharing communal spaces with flatmates. Keeping footwear neatly stored by the door helps prevent dirt and mud from being brought into your room. It also makes it easier to find the pair you need. A shoe rack can help you make better use of limited storage space while preventing shoes from cluttering the floor or blocking walkways. If space allows, consider using a small storage bench, under-bed organiser or hallway basket for items such as slippers, umbrellas and reusable bags. Edge Hill student Josephina explains: “It is good to have a certain place to put your shoes to prevent dirtiness.”
Laundry Basket
A laundry basket is a must-have. Place it somewhere visible and easy to reach in your room to avoid leaving dirty clothes on the floor. It can also help you feel more productive by keeping you on top of your laundry routine.
Feeling at Home
Photos of Loved Ones

Having photographs of the people who mean the most to you can help you settle into your new surroundings and provide a sense of familiarity. Whether you are studying, waking up or drifting off to sleep, photographs can offer comfort and provide a familiar, friendly face.Edge Hill University student Nevaeh said: “Things that remind you of home can bring you great comfort if you feel homesick or stressed.” Bringing her childhood stuffed toy helped Nevaeh feel at home in her new surroundings.
Home Comforts
Moving to university is an exciting experience but settling into a new room can take time. Bringing a few familiar items from home can make your space feel more comfortable, personal and welcoming, helping you to relax during the first few weeks. Consider packing a favourite blanket, cushions, photographs, small decorations or a familiar mug. You could also bring home comforts such as your favourite snacks, a dressing gown, slippers or a soft toy. These small touches can make a big difference, particularly when you are adjusting to a new routine. Try not to bring too much. Choose a few meaningful or practical items that will help make your new accommodation feel like home.
Speakers
Speakers can be useful for getting to know your new flatmates and hosting social gatherings while you become familiar with the people you will be spending time with.
They can also make everyday tasks such as cleaning and cooking more enjoyable. If you need an icebreaker, create a playlist and ask everyone to introduce one of their favourite songs. This can help you learn more about each other’s music tastes and spark conversations.

Bryan Tyrer, Accommodation Manager, said: “Living away from home when attending university is an exciting part of the whole experience but do not forget that there are shops in Ormskirk, which is accessible by a free bus service. Amazon deliveries can also be made to campus, so do not worry if you forget anything.”
