Seeing your student go off to university is an important step for you, as well as them. You may experience mixed emotions and students can experience similar feelings as they settle into their new home, make new friends and find their feet with a new way of life.

Here are our top five tips for how your student can have a positive first month at University:

1. Get involved

At Edge Hill, there is so much to get involved in. During Induction Week, there’ll be lots of activities planned around academic sessions, designed to encourage students to meet new, likeminded people. Encourage your young person to get as involved as they can and take advantage of any opportunities that come their way. And urge them to look into the sports teams, clubs and societies on offer at Edge Hill. They may be able to enhance a current hobby or try something new. And let them know that our Student Life Portal will advertise activities taking place throughout the year, so they’ll never miss out.

2. It’s okay to miss home

Moving away from home is a big step for anyone. If your student is homesick, reassure them that this is totally normal. Lots of other people will feel the same, even those who don’t show it, and it probably won’t last long.

We offer support for anyone who needs it. Students can:

  • speak to their Personal Tutor
  • email [email protected]
  • call into the Catalyst helpdesk to speak to an adviser.

3. Use the Student Life team

The Student Life team is a mix of staff and current students who are an excellent source of information/advice and can help students to settle into their new home on campus.

Our Campus Connectors work alongside staff to ensure every student feels welcomed, supported, and connected to the Edge Hill community. They play a key role in helping new and returning students settle into university life, promoting and supporting a vibrant programme of events, and offering friendly, low-level wellbeing support to their peers.

Campus Connectors can be recognised around campus in their purple shirts and are always happy to help all students on campus.

4. Stay active

With lots of academic work, it’s important that your student takes a break from time to time, to take part in things they enjoy and to stay active. The Sports Centre is a great place for this, with a full-equipped gym, lots of different exercise classes and a swimming pool. And with a discounted student membership, your student can enjoy all the facilities at a fraction of the price.

5. Explore the local area

Based at the heart of the North West and just a 10-minute walk away from Ormskirk town centre, there’s so much for your student to do. By venturing into the town centre, they’ll find independent shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. As well as the clock tower, green spaces, parks and more. There is so much to do with activities that suit all budgets.
