It’s Varsity time. Edge Hill University and the University of Lancashire are going head-to-head once again.

Since 2013, the rivalry has travelled back and forth. And this year, it’s our turn to host. Whether you’re competing, cheering from the side lines or just here for the atmosphere, Varsity is for everyone. Let’s make it loud, proud and unforgettable.

What is Varsity?

Varsity is the biggest sporting fixture of the year. The day is made up of a range of sports including:

  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Futsal
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Rounders
  • Rugby
  • Swimming
  • Table Tennis
  • Volleyball

And that’s not all. You’ll also find the Student Life team in the Sports Centre foyer, welcoming spectators and handing out all sorts of goodies to level up your match‑day look. From pom poms and face paint to flags, hair braiding, signs and posters. There will also be giveaways available throughout the day. Meanwhile, our Campus Connectors will be based in the Hub, helping you find the lunchtime fixtures and keeping you up to date with the latest scores.

Whether you are competing or supporting, there will be lots of fun to get involved with.

Get Varsity ready

On Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 April, the Student Life team will be popping up in the Hub with creative crafting sessions to help you make your own supporter gear. Think pom poms, flags, bunting and signs, everything you need to back your team in style. It’s a great way to get involved in the Varsity buzz, even if you’re not heading to the fixtures as a spectator. Everyone’s welcome, so come along and help build the atmosphere ahead of the big event.

How are the fixtures scored?

Each fixture has a winner and points are allocated. A win is worth 2 points. A draw is worth 1 point. And a loss is 0 points. To win, your team has to have the highest amount of points at the end of the day.

The points will be updated online throughout the day, with the results and trophy being revealed that evening.

When is Varsity 2026?

This year, Varsity takes place on Wednesday 15 April.
