The commitment to renewable electricity was confirmed by signing up to the Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) scheme, which certifies that the electricity consumed by the University at the Ormskirk campus will be generated entirely from renewable sources.
This move aligns with Edge Hill’s broader sustainability objectives aimed at reducing the University’s carbon footprint, enhancing energy efficiency and fostering a more sustainable future.
Corporate Sustainability Manager Keziah Stott said: “Edge Hill has long been committed to sustainability and reducing our environmental impact. By committing to REGOs for the next three years, we are ensuring that our electricity comes from renewable sources, setting an example for students, staff and the wider community on the importance of sustainable energy choices.”
Edge Hill has also committed to reducing waste, promoting biodiversity, encouraging behaviour change and engaging the University community in eco-friendly practices by raising awareness of energy consumption on campus.
Energy Manager Emma Fitzsimons added: “This considerable investment is just one part of a comprehensive strategy to make Edge Hill University a leader in environmental responsibility. We are committed to ensuring that every decision we make has a positive impact on the planet, and signing up to REGO is a crucial element of that vision.”
Edge Hill University continues to be recognised for its sustainability initiatives and has also recently been awarded the Green Flag for its green spaces for 13 consecutive years and recognised as a “top committed green university” by Uswitch in 2023.
