Supporters guide to University applications Part 3: June – August

September 23, 2024

Now your student has their offers and have visited all of the universities they want to see. From here, it’s time to make a decision on their preferred university and start preparing for results day.

Read on to see how you can support your student during the last part of the application process.

June

Once your student has received decisions from all their university/course choices, they will need to reply to them by the deadlines provided. They may also be invited to attend an interview as part of the selection process for some courses. As part of their decision they need to select which offers they want to make their firm and insurance choices.

The deadline to make their choices is 4 June 2025 for 2025 entry.

The decision ultimately must be down to the student themselves on where they want to go to university and what course to study. Try to go through the pros and cons of each university and talk to them about their future plans to check whether their course aligns with this.

If your student is struggling to decide, encourage them to look at other factors like student life, accommodation, student support and anything else that is important to them. Seeing what is available beyond their course might help them to make that final decision.

July

Someone on our Clearing helpdesk taking a call on Clearing day.

Clearing opens 5 July 2025 and is open until October. This offers a second chance to secure a place at university.

Your student may find themselves in Clearing if they’ve changed their mind, have achieved better grades than expected, didn’t receive the grades they expected to match the conditions of their offer, or they missed the application deadline in January.

Places cannot be offered in Clearing before your student has their results, but Edge Hill are able to offer a place in principle before results day, so we encourage students to get in touch early and put their minds at ease.

Read our Clearing advice for parents and supporters to find out how Clearing works and how you can help your student in this situation. It’s important to remember that Clearing isn’t a negative and is actually a great chance for students to ensure that they get where they want to be.

Things can change over a few months, and Clearing is available to help students who need to make changes.

August

A-Level/BTEC results are published in August and if your student has the entry requirements they needed for their Firm choice offer, the university will confirm their place.

If the student doesn’t get their results, or now would like to change course or university they can do so via Clearing. They will need to call the university themselves to discuss their place.

If they are planning to live in student halls, they may also need to confirm their place with the accommodation team if they haven’t already done so.

How can supporters help?

Most importantly, remain calm. Whatever happens on this day, your student has options and we will work with them as much as we can to help them get to where they want to be. Supporters should remain positive and encourage their student to contact universities if they have concerns.

If a student is going through Clearing, then make sure they have all their qualifications to hand when they are calling universities. This will make things run a lot smoother and will ensure that universities can give them an accurate offer.

They will need to provide evidence of their qualifications before enrolment, so make sure they keep them safe.

Once your student has their results and their places confirmed, the application process is complete. We know this is new to most people, so we hope that our guides have helped to keep you informed throughout the process.
