Edge Hill University shortlisted in three categories for Green Gown Awards 2024

July 26, 2024

Edge Hill University has been recognised for its commitment to sustainability with three finalist spots in the Green Gown Awards.

The awards – the equivalent of the Oscars for eco-friendly colleges and universities – celebrate education institutions that come up with innovative ways to protect the environment.

Edge Hill has been shortlisted in three categories:

  • Creating Impact
  • Staff Sustainability Champion
  • Reporting With Influence

The Creating Impact shortlisting is for Edge Hill’s interview clothing collection scheme, which has been in place since 2022.

Students can get kitted out for free in interview-ready clothes donated by other students, staff and the local community.

To date, 109 students have engaged with the project resulting in the repurposing of 207 items of clothing and saving around 50kg of waste from landfills.

Facilities Management Procurement Manager Dave Fendle has been shortlisted for Staff Sustainability Champion, while Reporting with Influence relates to the University’s ongoing efforts to chart its sustainability journey and use the information to impact and influence within the institution.

Edge Hill’s Corporate Sustainability Manager Keziah Stott said: “All three nominations reflect the hard work, dedication and ambition we have at Edge Hill University around sustainability.

“To have Dave recognised for his continued championing of sustainability is so well deserved. Dave has been one of the biggest supporters on so many sustainability projects and his approach to sustainable procurement is so inspirational.

“To have our sustainability reporting shortlisted speaks not only to the effort put into this work by Corporate Sustainability, but also reflects the level of governance we have behind our reporting.

“We have been recognised as Creating Impact thanks to the work our Student Life team has done to provide students with sustainably sourced interview clothing. In doing so they are not only reducing clothing waste, but also breaking down barriers to success and ensuring no student goes to an interview feeling under prepared.”

Winners and highly commended entries will be announced at the Green Gown Awards Ceremony in Edinburgh on 13 November.

Edge Hill is committed to improving its environmental performance: the University was highly commended in the 2011 Green Gown Awards for Sustainable Construction & Refurbishment in respect of the £4.2million Durning Centre; was recently awarded the Green Flag award for being one of the UK’s best green spaces for the 13th successive year and in 2023 it was graded in the Platinum Tier as a “top committed green university” by Uswitch.
