Edge Hill University wins top award for inspiring the next generation of conservationists

June 29, 2023

Edge Hill University's MSc Conservation Management degree has won Higher Education Programme of the Year, recognising the course's ability to inspire the next generation of conservationists.

The award recognises Edge Hill’s efforts to equip students with the practical skills and ecological theories needed to manage ecosystems, restore habitats, and protect the environment.

Members of the University’s biology department picked up the accolade at the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) awards which celebrate the very best examples of ecology and conservation in the UK and Ireland.

Senior Lecturer in Ecology Dr Marcio Pie is the course leader, he said: “We are incredibly proud to have won this award, presented to us by a highly respected professional body, which recognises the positive impact our students and academics are making on conservation.

“Edge Hill University is fully committed to promoting sustainability and protecting the environment. Our MSc Conservation Management programme exemplifies this by helping to shape the conservationists of tomorrow, equipping them with everything they need to take on the challenge of protecting and restoring our planet.”

The MSc Conservation Management programme is accredited by CIEEM and emphasises employability with over 25 days of fieldwork, a six-day residential field trip, and 10-20 days of placement work at a conservation consultancy or business. This ensures that students have all the practical skills they need to work in a wide range of conservation and ecology roles.

The majority of Edge Hill’s conservation graduates secure jobs in ecological consultancy and environmental research or working for governments and conservation NGOs. Organisations that employ Edge Hill graduates include Natural England, Wildlife Trusts, the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, the National Trust, the RSPB, Avian Ecology, and Wardell-Armstrong.

CIEEM is the leading professional membership body representing and supporting ecologists and environmental managers in the UK and Ireland. Its overall mission is to raise the standards and profile of professional ecological and environmental management for the benefit of nature and society.
