Edge Hill celebrates students and businesses at careers awards evening

Edge Hill University held an awards ceremony recognising the students, academics and businesses who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to employability.

The 2023 careers awards were the biggest yet, with six individual awards for current students and alumni and five organisation categories for employers, voluntary organisations and Edge Hill departments.

The awards celebrate the hard work of students, staff, alumni, employers and voluntary organisations do to improve employability and increase the work-related skills amongst current students.

Head of Careers and Graduate Employability, Becka Colley-Foster said: “Edge Hill is focussed on equipping our students with the skills they need to confidently enter the world of work. Every year, students, academics, charities and businesses impress us with their commitment to employability and inspire us with their effort, dedication and innovation.

“The careers awards celebrate all of these achievements and this year’s winners are the perfect examples of how much can be achieved on placements, through work experience and by working with together with our partners.”

The winners are:

Individual Awards

Student Volunteer of the Year

  • Winner: Gabby Howson-Tax. Gabby has done incredible things with the Scouts, from opening the first Squirrel Drey in Blackpool to being the Blackpool District Youth Commissioner.
  • Runner-Up: Emilia McRobie.

Student Employee of the Year

  • Winner: Eleanor Rowell. She is an integral part of the Student Life team, coming up with new ideas and treating everyone with kindness.
  • Runner-Up: Maisie Gotham.
  • Runner-Up: Rhianna Walton.

Graduate Employee of the Year

  • Winner: Matthew Price. A Mental Health Nursing & Social Work (Hons) graduate who now works for The Priory.
  • Runner-Up: Amber Humphries.
  • Runner-Up: Ellis Kindred.

Alumni Award

  • Winner: Eleanor Groves. She is a qualified solicitor at Express Solicitors and regularly visits Edge Hill to give taster lectures and advise students.
  • Runner-Up: Tenderfoot Theatre Company.
  • Runner-Up: Andrew Harrison.

Sandwich Placement of the Year

  • Winner: Elise Westbury-Jones. This student excelled during her time at Gymshark having worked in numerous sections of the Cyber Security team.
  • Runner-Up: Alexander Jay.

Student Union Contributor of the Year

  • Winner: Jack Richardson. Since his election in Spring 2022, he has been dedicated to improving career prospects for Arts & Sciences students.
  • Runner-Up: Amy Fox.

Organisation Awards

Student Employer of the Year

  • Winner: The Media Store. As well as giving equipment and advice to students they have also provided five excellent job opportunities every year.
  • Runner-Up: Student Life Team.

Graduate Employer of the Year

  • Joint Winner: D3t. A games company based in Runcorn that works with Computer Science students to boost their employability and offer careers advice.
  • Joint Winner: Everton in the Community.

Voluntary Organisation of the Year

  • Winner: CoppaFeel! This charity has provided volunteering opportunities that give boost students’ confidence and equip them with new skills.

Best Department for Employability including Employability Lead of the Year

  • Winner: Sport and Physical Activity and Employability (Lead: Andy Smith). This department has gone above and beyond, providing opportunities with major organisations such as Everton in the Community and the Tackling the Blues project.
  • Runner-Up: Early Years Education – Initial Teacher Education and Early Career Teacher Employability (Lead: Heidi Winrow).
  • Runner-Up: Primary and Childhood Education and Strategic Employability (Lead: Mark Sutcliffe).

Sandwich placement provider of the Year

  • Winner: The Walton Centre. Over the years they have provided a range of sandwich placements for Computer Science students in it’s IT development team.
  • Runner-Up: VMware UK.
