Edge Hill University to launch International Justice and Human Rights Centre

March 7, 2023

Experts in international law at Edge Hill University will head up a new research centre.

The International Justice and Human Rights Centre (IJHRC) will act as a hub for international legal research on wide-ranging topics from human rights, asylum and UN peacekeeping to conflict and security law, environmental law, and climate change.

Co-directed by Dr Mariagiulia Giuffré and Dr Mia Swart, the IJHRC core team will be completed by Dr Patrick Butchard and Dr Jennifer Giblin and supplemented by PhD students specialising in international law and human rights.

Research projects will bring about real-world impact by enabling innovative thinking and guiding policy development.

To mark the launch of the centre, Professor Oksana Senatorova from Yaroslav Mudryi University, Kharkiv, will lead a discussion on the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on international law.

Dr Mia Swart, Senior Lecturer in International Human Rights Law and IJHRC co-director, said: “The International Justice and Human Rights Centre will provide a forum for maximising the impact of our research in international criminal law, international humanitarian law, human rights law, public international law, international conflict and security law, migration, criminal justice, and human rights.

“Now more than ever, international justice and human rights are at the forefront of the research agenda, and our academics are experts in topics from climate change to migration to artificial intelligence. We look forward to hearing from Professor Senatorova, a leader in the field.”

To celebrate the launch of the IJHRC, Edge Hill’s School of Law, Criminology and Policing is hosting a free event in Creative Edge on Wednesday 15 March at 3.30pm
