Voluntary organisation placement
Edge Hill University Medical School has an ethos of social accountability and community engagement, with the aim of showing students that health and social care does not just take place on NHS premises.
We have been working in partnership with local Community Voluntary Sector (CVS) organisations to provide our students with an understanding of where and how people receive health and social care. Partnership working between the voluntary sector, local government and the NHS is crucial to improving care for people and communities.
The NHS Long Term Plan and NHS Five Year Forward View highlight the need for closer working across these sectors to address the wider determinants of health, which in turn could impact how people use their health and social care services.
Our second-year medical students are given the opportunity to research and find their voluntary placements. These experiences provide opportunities for them to work within a team to learn how to build positive relationships, apply their communication skills, develop the professional behaviours of a doctor, work with service users and understand the public and community perspectives about health. It also enables them to understand how their own behaviours, values and attitudes might impact on others.
