Modern and specialist equipment at both Ormskirk and Manchester offers stimulating and innovative practice within realistic, risk free settings, to support the teaching, learning and assessment for our health care students; including Midwifery, Nursing, Operating Department Practice, Paramedic Practice, Social Work and Applied Health and Social Care programmes.  The facilities are also available to our postgraduate students and those studying CPD modules.

The Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre is shared with students studying many health care related disciplines, creating opportunity for interprofessional learning and collaboration, as practical skills and valuable experience are gained.  We have a variety of teaching rooms, including those with computerised facilities.  Patient manikins, which can breathe, sweat, choke, tremble and cry like real-life patients.  These can be controlled by tutors and facilitators via computer.  Cameras and ipads are available to provide live play and playback for assessment and feedback to students and observers.

At the Ormskirk campus the Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre is based in the Faculty of Health, Social Care & Medicine, rooms H101 – H105 on the ground floor.

Room H101 is a large teaching room with two defined areas.  A hospital ward setting and a simulated operating theatre.  Room H102 provides the office and store room for our Clinical Skills Support staff, and is next to Room H103, also known as The WellChild Better at Home Suite.

The WellChild Better at Home Suite was developed in collaboration with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the WellChild charity as the UK’s first parent and carer training facility.  Professor Tanya Byron Chancellor of Edge Hill University, opened this facility in December 2015.

Room H104 provides space for general clinical skills practice, eg blood pressure measurements, cannulation, catheterization, and CPR, with Room H105 offering home and community care settings and a consultation room.

The Centre is available for external organisations to hire and is an excellent location for staff training.

St James’ Manchester is a bespoke, dynamic and supportive learning environment for Edge Hill University students studying Operating Department Practice and Paramedic Practice programmes.  The site includes a state of the art clinical skills suite, a replica ambulance and an immersive suite, all situated on the 1st Floor at the St James’ Manchester site.  The team also work with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service to simulate trauma scenarios.  You can read more here

Partnership and Practice Learning Unit

The Partnership and Practice Learning Support Unit works with partner organisations across all programme areas.  The team includes Practice Education Lecturers (PELs) who work with Edge Hill University students when they are on placement.

Applied Health and Social Care Clinical Skills

The Applied Health and Social Care programme portfolio includes clinical skills sessions within individual course timetables.  For some this includes research in the Biology labs, or integrating with on site sports facilities.  Many students have the opportunity to experiment with our bariatric and geriatric suits, to understand the implications of health, nutrition, wellbeing and social care within different demographic groups.  Also using our community settings in Room H105 and reminiscence pods.
