Opening the research lifecycle

Open research shows how research is done as well as what is done.

The principles of open research apply to all stages of the research lifecycle; it really is an umbrella term. You can embed open research practices at different stages of a project. The approach should be as open as possible, as closed as necessary. There are good reasons why some research will have to remain closed.

The University of Glasgow’s open research video is a good review of the practices that you can adopt before, during and after a project.

Researchers from all disciplines can open up their research, although practices vary. Highlighted on this page are practices you can consider.
