International Summer School 2024

Biology is a practical subject. Theories are tested and refined in the lab or the field. The pandemic has hindered the development of these practical skills. This course is set to address this skills gap and provide you with a range of experiences that will be the perfect start to a career in biology or any lab based profession. It will be underpinned by relevant practical work and taught by a team of experts. 

Encompassing the breadth of the subject, the sessions will incorporate microscopy, both light microscopy and using a Scanning Electron Microscope. It will include an introduction to DNA based approaches and microbiological techniques. To complete the experience, field work will provide you with ecological survey skills. Lab work will utilise modern top of the range equipment and field work will include visits to some of the best habitats in the North West of England. 

* An English language level of Intermediate (B1/IELTS 5 equivalent) is recommended for taking part on this course.

Our programme offers individual courses and tracks in tourism management, social entrepreneurship, and marketing that cater to diverse interests and career aspirations. You can choose to enrol in a two-week standalone course or combine multiple courses for a comprehensive four-week summer school.

Our tourism management summer school (week 1 and 2) offers a unique opportunity to learn from industry experts and gain first-hand knowledge of the tourism industry. You will explore tourism marketing strategies and learn how to effectively manage tourism destinations, including branding, visitor management, and destination marketing.

If you’re interested in making a positive impact on society and the environment, our social entrepreneurship summer school (week 1 and 2) is the perfect fit for you. You’ll learn about social innovation and creativity, business planning skills, financial management, and fundraising. Additionally, you’ll develop leadership and teamwork skills required to run a successful social enterprise.

Finally, if you’re looking to develop your marketing skills, you can enrol in our stand-alone marketing course that runs for the final two weeks (weeks 3 and 4) or combine it with our earlier tourism or social entrepreneurship courses for a comprehensive learning experience. You’ll learn about market research, consumer behaviour, segmentation, targeting, positioning, and branding. Drawing on local and regional cases and learning from industry experts, you’ll gain hands-on experience in applying marketing concepts to real-world scenarios.

All our courses culminate in a group project and end-of-course presentation, facilitated and guided by expert tutors. Whatever your interests, our Summer School Programme will equip you with the knowledge and practical skills you need to succeed in the world of business.

The Language Centre English Language & British Culture Summer School is a three-week course consisting of English language development, British cultural themes, and recreational and cultural activities and trips. The course can be shortened to two weeks or extended to four weeks if required. The course provides a mix of English language and British culture leaning and teaching, activities, and recreational trips. The language classes develop and enhance all four skills in English emphasising communicative fluency and accuracy. A group project leading to an end of course presentation, facilitated and guided by the class tutor, will also form part of the course.

The course aims to:

• Enhance your understanding and use of English in a variety of contexts.
• Develop your communicative skills with a focus on speaking and listening.
• Increase your knowledge of British culture.
• Provide an engaging, enjoyable, and interesting experience through taking part in activities and trips to places of interest.

This course is suited to students who want to practice and enhance their English with a particular focus on developing and improving communicative competence. The course will also be useful to those who want to learn more about UK culture and visit places of interest particularly within the north-west of England.

* An English language level of Elementary (IELTS 3 equivalent) or above is recommended for taking part on this course.

Making Sense of Politics – Making Sense of the World.

This Summer School aims to help students navigate their way through the often-changing world of Politics.

Focusing mainly, but not entirely, on the UK, the course will explore Politics from a range of vantage points.  We will look at systems and at people.  We will ask how policies are made, how politicians communicate and how political parties’ plan.  There is scope to focus on current or contentious issues such as conflict over Northern Ireland or the issue of prisoners’ votes as well as to examine how the media covers politics and political issues.  Students will take part in at least one practical project and will have the opportunity to take part in visits and to meet people currently operating in the Political world.

This school would appeal to students who want to gain a deeper understanding of how decisions are made and how Politics works.  While focusing mainly on the UK, many of the principles are applicable to other democracies and there will be scope for some comparative work.

We don’t expect students to already have knowledge of UK systems.  But an interest in Politics and in the news is essential.

The Department of Sport and Physical Activity’s Sport, Physical Activity and Mental Health Summer School is a two-week course that can be offered as stand-alone options, but which can be combined into a 4-week offer. The course is built around three core themes:

(1) mental health in community and professional sport

(2) sport and physical activity interventions for mental health

(3) working and researching in sport, physical activity and mental health.

A group project leading to an end of course presentation, facilitated and guided by the class tutor, will also form part of the course as will visits to external partners.

The course aims to:

• Enhance your understanding and use of mental health in community and professional sport.
• Develop your ability to design, deliver and evaluate sport and physical activity interventions for mental health.
• Introduce you to ways of researching and working in diverse sport, physical activity and related mental health settings.
• Provide an engaging, enjoyable, and interesting experience through taking part in activities and trips to external partners and places of interest.

This course is suitable for students who want to understand, research and work in sport, physical activity and mental health in professional sports organisations and local communities. The course will also be useful to those who want to learn more about how to support mental health in other settings, including business, health, education, and in the voluntary sector.

Our PGR Summer School is split into two different options:

The first two-week summer school is designed for those who want to develop a better understanding of the range of skills required in the design, planning, management, conduct, dissemination, presentation and defence in examination of high-quality research. Through a series of distinct, yet interconnected, workshops, participants will not only have the opportunity to learn from experienced researchers, research degree examiners, journal editors and fellow postgraduate researchers, but also to move elements of their own research degree work forward as a central feature of both summer schools will be the application of insights gained and skills developed to your own work so that you go home with significant work done that progresses the production of your own thesis and/or work for publication.

The second two-week summer school is for those who need to focus on a particular task. This could be the production of a revised draft of a chapter of their thesis, the revision of a manuscript for submission or re-submission to a journal, or perhaps the preparation of a first draft of a manuscript. This summer school will help you to think structurally about the text you produce, to understand what research degree examiners, journal reviewers and editors are looking for, and to develop skills and techniques that will enable you to produce a much higher quality text at the first attempt while also understanding the purpose of feedback and how to learn from it and use it to enhance both your work as a whole and the specific texts you produce.

In both summer schools there will be a dual focus on your development as a researcher and on getting work done.

To that end mornings will be in development mode, focussing on bringing greater depth to your understanding and facilitating the development of skills through the introduction of a range of relevant techniques and methods. Afternoons will be in production mode. It is in those workshops that you will put into practice, in the specific context of your own work, the things that you are in the process of learning. Contextualising matters explored in the developmental workshops in your own work won’t just enable you to get some work done and go home with something concrete to show for your efforts, but it will also greatly improve your understanding and your development of the requisite skills.

Built into the day will be designated time for academic feedback and discussion with your peers, fellow researchers, and academics. Sufficiently enriched with time for travel and socialising, whether you are here for two weeks or four, you will gain a lot from your visit and should make considerable progress with your research design and/or production of writing.
