What are the key aims of the module?

  • To develop clinical diagnostic capabilities
  • Foster the ability to synthesise holistic patient presentations/data gathered to inform an evidenced-based management plan, within the defined scope of practice
  • To develop in-depth knowledge, understanding, skills and behaviours required in all phases of surgical care: pre/peri, intra and postoperative care of the complex adult surgical patient.

What will I study?

The core content of this module will focus on developing theoretical in-depth knowledge and understanding, clinical and technical skills for pre/peri, intra and postoperative care (including history, examination, investigation, interpretation and diagnostics), preparation for the operating theatre environment and working within the multidisciplinary team and intraoperative skills (including basic surgical skills and assisting/performing certain surgical procedures).

In the context of the complex surgical patient, develop knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the human body in health and disease related to common clinical conditions.

Throughout all phases of surgical care demonstrate critical clinical reasoning in the context of the complex patient to develop a safe and evidence-based management plan.
