Context of Advanced Surgical Care Practice HEA4520

Overview

This is a core module within the MSc in Surgical Care Practice course which is taught within the first term of the first year of this three year programme. This foundation module introduces the Trainee Surgical Care Practitioner (TSCP) to the context of their role and capabilities required to deliver high quality, safe and effective care for surgical patients within the extended surgical team and their defined scope of practice.

Who is this module for?

This module will be valuable to practitioners undertaking the MSc in Surgical Care Practice and who are employed in that role by Surgical Directorates.

What are the key aims of the module?

  • To equip practitioners understanding of the various professional, legal and ethical demands of working at an advanced level making autonomous clinical decisions.
  • To support practitioners to work creatively and innovatively, utilising critical thinking and reflective abilities to promote their own practice development, and improved patient care.
  • To support students’ ability to self-direct their own learning.

How will I be assessed?

The academic assessment for the module consists of one element:

  • Critical Appraisal of the individual’s developmental journey as a trainee SCP.

On successful completion you will:

Informed by best evidence, critically reflect on own learning needs and develop a personal development plan mapped to the SCP capabilities of practice and own contribution within the Surgical multidisciplinary team.

Introduction to Faculty Management

Curriculum Overview
We will discuss the programme which is based on the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS Eng) and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCS Ed) Curriculum framework for the SCP, which focuses on clinical competence and professional development.

Learning Platform
Guidance on logging in, navigating resources, and maximizing learning tools and features.

Student Support
Information about how to access to both internal support (faculty, advisors, technical help and wellbeing) and external support (professional networks)

Learning Services
Includes academic resources, study skills support, and digital tools and toolkits to enhance learning.

Teaching & Learning and assessment Methods
Delivered through lectures, clinical placements, and online modules, accommodating various learning styles.

Clinical Assessment & Portfolio
Information about real-time evaluations in clinical settings and use of a and how to manage the digital portfolio platform to document progress and reflections.
