Nursing is one of the most rewarding careers to enter and on qualification registered nurses are employed in a variety of settings. Children’s nurses work with children who have a diverse range of health conditions, some of whom will be facing the most challenging life events. As a children’s nurse you will deliver care to children with acute and complex care needs, while also gaining a broader awareness of the needs of all client groups and meeting the challenges of a changing healthcare environment. With access to practice learning placements, this Masters degree provides the opportunity for graduates to enter the nursing profession. It will enable you to register as a qualified children’s nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), having developed the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to help plan, coordinate and deliver care in a safe, compassionate and effective way.
What will I study?
This two-year Masters degree is delivered in a supportive learning environment. You will have the opportunity to achieve nursing proficiencies, aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s standards of proficiency, which represent the skills, knowledge and attributes that children’s nurses must demonstrate.
In Year 1 you will focus on professionalism, communication, personal resilience and emotional intelligence. You will discover the principles of person-centred care, focus on the promotion of health and wellbeing, and engage in simulated education and practice placements where you will be supported by practice supervisors and assessors. You will also examine research methodologies and enhance your skills and understanding in evidence-based care.
Year 2 enhances your core and field-specific competencies in person-centred care. There will be a focus on leadership and management, evaluating care and working in teams, as well as disciplines such as pharmacology and medication management. You will also be introduced to the principles of organisational change and public policy and the development of political awareness. You will undertake further practice placements where you will confirm your achievement of nursing proficiencies in preparation for professional registration.

How will I study?
The programme places emphasis on independent learning, supported by classroom-based sessions and the use of technology enhanced learning. While the majority of classes will take place at Edge Hill University, some may involve studying at sites other than Ormskirk in which case you will be responsible for travel and parking costs.
You will develop clinical skills confidence through a combination of simulated education and extensive time in practice undertaken in hospital and community settings within the NHS, local authorities, and independent and voluntary organisations. Practice settings will be drawn from our network of more than 600 placement locations across Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire. You will be supported by a practice placement assessor and supervisor.
Placements include weekend, early morning, evening and night work to ensure access to a full range of practice experiences across 24-hour care. You will be responsible for travel and parking costs while on placement. There may also be the opportunity to undertake a practice learning experience outside the region, either within the United Kingdom or internationally.
How will I be assessed?
In each year, you will be assessed by a written assessment, oral assessment, a simulated practical assessment and an examination.
While on practice placement, you will be supported in the development of the application of knowledge and skills, leading to the assessment of related proficiencies.

You will taught by professionals in children’s nursing, other fields of nursing, and other specialist areas within health and social care.
The programme team represent a range of qualified, research-active professionals with extensive experience of working in the health and social care sector.
Most importantly, service users, carers and their families will be involved in facilitating your learning so that you gain an understanding of the impact care has on individual groups.
The Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine offers some of the best facilities for the education and training of health and social care professionals in the country.
The outstanding teaching and learning resources include leading edge clinical skills facilities, an 860-seat lecture theatre, and a variety of teaching rooms and social learning spaces.
The Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre offers a variety of simulated environments from home, through primary and emergency care, to secondary care and beyond. The flexible and adaptable facilities include a ward environment, operating theatre, an anatomy and ultrasound resource centre, a ‘Better at Home’ suite, clinical skills area and consultation rooms.
You will benefit from access to a wide variety of healthcare equipment, as well as a range of full-body patient simulators that can breathe, talk, have pulses and can simulate a wide range of symptoms and clinical conditions. This will enable you to undertake practical scenarios in realistic settings, providing ideal preparation for professional practice placements and future employment.
Year 1: Preparing for the Role of the Registered Nurse (90 credits)
Preparing for the Role of the Registered Nurse provides you with a range of core and field-specific learning opportunities. You will learn the principles of person-centred care and assessment to understand why it is important to build a more complete picture of a person in terms of their physical, social and psychological needs. As nurses are paramount as promoters of good health, this year of study will also focus on promoting health and wellbeing, as well as the prevention of ill health. You will discover how to meet the health and social care needs of people and their families/carers during all life stages. Learning will also cover the importance of professional nursing principles. These include professional values, effective communication and interpersonal skills, nursing practice, decision making, leadership, management and teamwork. A comprehensive introduction to research will also be provided that focuses on the value of evidence-based practice to inform safe, effective nursing care.

Year 2: Developing Nursing Practice (90 credits)
Developing Nursing Practice enhances your core and field-specific competencies. Additionally, you will build on your knowledge and understanding of leadership and management skills and effective teamwork while continuing to focus on the importance of evidence-based practice and person-centred approaches to assessment and care. Disciplines such as pharmacology and medication management will be included to further strengthen your knowledge, skills and understanding of safe, effective nursing practice. You will also gain knowledge of contemporary health and social care policy and legislation to gain insight into how such processes influence the delivery of nursing care.

You should have a degree equivalent to UK first-class or second-class honours (2:2 or above). Health-related subjects are preferred but not essential. Other subjects will be considered on an individual basis.
An interview forms part of the selection process.
Pre-registration nursing programmes are typically three years in duration so, in order to join this two-year MSc, you will be required to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This will be in the form of three short pieces of written work (essays) and evidence which will also confirm that you have met a minimum of 700 hours of appropriate health-related occupational or voluntary experience. Further details about RPL, including guidance on the development of your three short academic essays, will be sent to you upon successful completion of an interview.
If you accept an offer from Edge Hill you will need to satisfy the requirements of the Nursing & Midwifery Council in respect of physical and mental fitness and will be required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure indicating that you meet the mandatory criteria of ‘Clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults’. Further information will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.
What are my career prospects?
Children’s nurses work in partnership with families to care for all children and young people, whether well or sick, injured or disabled. They support children with acute illness, chronic ill health or long-term life-limiting conditions and are instrumental in maintaining the health of children and young people through health promotion. Offering comfort and reassurance to patients and their parents or carers in difficult or distressing circumstances, they provide care that is sensitive to the child’s physical, developmental and emotional needs, whether in hospitals, the community or the home.
Following registration as a children’s nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, you can pursue a career in a variety of settings. These include specialist children’s hospitals, general hospitals and paediatric community services/teams.
The course will also prove useful in the areas of leadership, management and consultancy, as well as education and research. There are significant opportunities for further professional development and specialism.
If you are a prospective UK student who will be joining this MSc in academic year 2022/23, the tuition fee will be £9,250 a year.
EU/EEA and Swiss students who have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, as well as Irish nationals, may be eligible for the UK tuition fee rate.
The University may administer a small inflationary rise in tuition fees, in line with Government policy, in subsequent academic years as you progress through the course.
Subject to eligibility, UK students joining this programme can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees. UK students enrolling on the programme may also be eligible to apply for additional funding to help with living costs. This includes a training grant of at least £5,000 a year for Nursing students.
Please note, unless you are applying to Student Finance Wales, if you are applying to study an MSc Nursing pathway, for student finance purposes you should apply for financial support as if you are an undergraduate Nursing student rather than for postgraduate funding. Covid-19 - Nursing (Child) Essential Information
Nursing (Child) Course StatementIn line with Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements, delivery will consist of face-to-face delivery by lecturers. This will be a mix of live interactive teaching in an online environment and attendance on campus. Attendance in clinical practice is also an essential part of the programme. For the theory component of the programme, there will be campus attendance and online learning comprising of synchronous (seminar, tutorial) and asynchronous (lecture, discussion board) learning activities and academic support. For practice learning, you will attend clinical practice where student safety has been assured. This will include learning using simulation, which will be either on campus or via virtual learning environments. Attendance on campus will be compliant with current Public Health England guidelines. If government advice allows, there will a minimum of six hours on-campus attendance on one day per week. This may include theoretical learning, pastoral/academic support and/or independent learning activities.
