The Nursing and Midwifery Council published new standards for nursing education in May 2018. As a result of this, we will be introducing a new nursing curriculum from September 2020.
If you are joining this programme in April 2020, you will initially follow the current programme structure and transition on-course to the new curriculum.
If you are joining this programme in September 2020, you will study the new curriculum from the start of your course. Details of the new curriculum are currently being finalised and will be published soon.
Nursing is one of the most rewarding careers to enter, and more importantly it is a privilege. Children’s Nurses assess, plan and develop individual packages of care designed to provide the appropriate levels of physical, emotional and psychological care to meet the needs of children, young people and their families, while meeting the challenges of a changing healthcare environment.
This Masters degree provides the exciting opportunity for graduates to enter the nursing profession. You will gain a comprehensive education in nursing and develop into a confident, autonomous, compassionate and research-aware practitioner, specialising in children’s nursing. The programme includes an innovative exploration of leadership and management in healthcare and will enable you to critically evaluate evidence to inform decision making and apply analytical and creative problem solving approaches to complex situations. You will be fully equipped with the skills, knowledge and practical experience required to deliver excellent care as a modern-day nursing professional.
What will I study?
Year 1 provides the opportunity to achieve national generic and field specific competency outcomes. These include professional values, communication and interpersonal skills, nursing practice, decision making, leadership, management and team working. The programme will immerse you in health promotion, prevention strategies and best practice for service users and their families. A comprehensive introduction will also be provided to the research process.
Year 2 continues the development of field-specific competencies, with a particular focus on caring for children with complex, critical or life limiting conditions. In addition to this, you will develop the leadership and management skills required for the transition to professional practice.
This programme adheres closely to the six core values of the NHS. These values, enshrined within the NHS Constitution, have been developed by patients, the public and staff to inspire passion in the NHS, guide it in the 21st century, and provide common ground for cooperation in achieving shared aspirations. How will I study?
You will be taught using a combination of seminars, lectures, tutorials, work-based learning and technology enhanced learning. The theory part of the programme is delivered during the normal working week (Monday to Friday). While the majority of classes will take place at Edge Hill University, some modules may involve studying at sites other than Ormskirk in which case you will be responsible for travel and parking costs.
You will spend 50% of your time in practice which will be undertaken in hospitals and community settings within the NHS, local authority, independent and voluntary organisations. You will be supported by a practice placement mentor/supervisor and a practice education facilitator.
Placements include weekend, early morning, evening and night work to ensure access to a full range of practice experiences across 24 hour care. You will be responsible for travel and parking costs while on placement. There may also be the opportunity to undertake a practice learning experience outside the region, either within the United Kingdom or internationally.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment in both theory and practice is continuous, assessed against national outcomes and generic and field competencies, with students required to demonstrate evidence of their achievement. A range of assessment of theory procedures is in place including assignments, seminar presentations, advanced notice examinations, online learning activities, case studies and portfolio work.
Who will be teaching me?
All lectures are delivered by professionals within the field of nursing as well as specialists in other areas. The pathway team represent a range of qualified, research-active professionals with extensive experience of working within the health and/or social care sector. Most importantly service users, carers and their families will be involved in facilitating learning so that an understanding is gained about the impact care has on individual groups.

The leading edge clinical skills facilities include ward simulations and operating theatres with industry standard equipment, as well as robot-style mannequins that can simulate a wide range of symptoms, from pregnancy to a temperature, to ensure your learning experience is as realistic as possible.
Edge Hill University has excellent relationships with NHS hospital and community trusts, enabling us to offer practice-based learning opportunities across a variety of care contexts, with placements at more than 600 locations in Merseyside, Cheshire and Lancashire.
The faculty is home to a thriving research culture which includes a series of staff and student conference programmes, guest lectures and seminars, as well as active research groups.
PUP4001Care Coordination in Evidence Based Practice (30 credits)
Care Coordination in Evidence Based Practice introduces you to the many demands that promote health and best practice for service users, their carers, families, the government and health care systems. The module explores chronic health and illness across the lifespan and introduces you to more complex situations within health care practice. You will critique current care provision and utilise evidence-based research. There is a particular focus on the proactive role of the professional nurse in the provision of health promotion and prevention strategies, in relation to long term conditions, which involve behavioural interventions. You will also consider current research, as well as key legal and health policy and its impact on service delivery.

PUP4002Critically Appraising Research Methods (30 credits)
Critically Appraising Research Methods enhances your knowledge of the research process through recognition of the fundamental stages of research design. You will be introduced to the principles of critical appraisal and modes of critical analysis. The module will focus on research design, including the research question, methods, ethical issues, data management and analysis strategies, as well as the reporting of findings. A clear understanding of the research process is central to develop competence in the critical appraisal of evidence which underpins the delivery of care and enables the effective, informed application of knowledge to practice.

PUP4095Developing Competence in Inter-Professional Practice (20 credits)
Developing Competence in Inter-Professional Practice facilitates the development of a critical appreciation of the nurse’s role and the professional constraints in which nurses operate within inter-professional teams in order to deliver safe, compassionate, person-centred evidence-based nursing practice. Practice learning is a key component of the module and you will be expected to safely demonstrate fundamental skills and activities with care, compassion, underpinning knowledge and appropriate attitudes under close supervision. You will also enhance your skills in critical writing and reflection.

PUP4096Enhancing Competence in Inter-Professional Practice (20 credits)
Enhancing Competence in Inter-Professional Practice continues to develop your practical and professional skills through a process of critical reflection both on and in practice. The aim is to equip you with a skill set that demonstrates your ability to practice autonomously. Exposure to both field-specific and generic practice learning opportunities will enable you to contextualise your experience. A key focus in this module is engagement with users, carers and their families in a range of inter-professional practice settings. You will develop a systematic understanding of the challenges associated with team dynamics within the context of inter-professional care delivery. During practice placements, you will be expected to consistently demonstrate skills and activities at an emerging level of competence with care, compassion, underpinning knowledge and appropriate attitudes. Your mentor will encourage you to take responsibility and develop autonomy for care delivery with less direct supervision.

PUP4099Achieving Competence in Inter-Professional Practice (20 credits)
Achieving Competence in Inter-Professional Practice provides the opportunity to develop your practice through a process of critical reflection, to analytically appraise and synthesise your current skill acquisition and identify areas for professional development. A key focus of the module is to develop advocacy skills reflective of your developing leadership, management and supervisory style in order to foster and promote innovative practice. Practice experiences in this module will enable you to develop increasing confidence to meet the more complex and coexisting needs of people within your field of practice. You will be expected to consistently demonstrate and promote evidence-based care with compassion, confidence, competence and appropriate attitudes, taking increasing responsibility for care delivery and offering support to your peers studying at earlier stages of the programme. The level of supervision should reflect your developing autonomy. There will also be the opportunity to gain experience of international health care provision.

PUP4102Care of The Child Who Has Complex, Critical or Life Limiting Conditions (30 credits)
Care of The Child Who Has Complex, Critical or Life Limiting Conditions prepares you to care for children within a critical care setting, either as an emergency or as part of a long-term life limiting condition. A variety of care situations, including primary, secondary and/or tertiary care, will be considered. An enquiry-based approach will be adopted, equipping you with the research and evidence-based key theories and practical skills required to care for the child/young person with regards to their psychological, physical, mental, social and emotional needs.

PUP4104Leadership in Professional Practice (30 credits)
Leadership in Professional Practice enables you to prepare for professional practice and develop the innovative leadership capabilities necessary to improve services and enhance service user safety. The module employs active learning strategies which are designed to stimulate the development of clinical leadership and change management skills. The importance of engaging with service users and their families at all stages of service planning, delivery and evaluation will be emphasised. The key aim of the module is to support you in becoming an autonomous practitioner who can work within complex teams to enhance service users’ experience of health care and support ongoing professional development of both yourself and others.

You can expect to receive your timetable at enrolment. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day or evening of the week.
You should have a degree equivalent to UK first-class or second-class honours (2:2 or above) in a health-related subject. Other subjects may be considered on an individual basis.
You will also need GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics at Grade C or Grade 4 or above (or equivalent). Eligible candidates must provide evidence of study within the five years prior to application and be able to demonstrate relevant voluntary/work experience.
An interview forms part of the selection process.
Pre-registration nursing programmes are typically three years in duration so, in order to join this two-year MSc, you will be required to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This will be in the form of a portfolio of evidence which will also confirm that you have met a minimum of 500 hours of appropriate health related occupational or voluntary experience. Further details about RPL, including guidance on the development of your portfolio, will be sent to you upon successful completion of an interview.
If you accept an offer from Edge Hill you will need to satisfy the requirements of the Nursing & Midwifery Council in respect of physical and mental fitness and will be required to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure indicating that you meet the mandatory criteria of ‘Clearance to Work with Children and/or Vulnerable Adults’. Further information will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer.
What are my career prospects?
The complex and dynamic landscape of modern nursing requires nurses who can work creatively and innovatively, who can lead and inspire, who can make decisions in challenging situations and who can contribute to the advancement of nursing.
Career opportunities are excellent. NMC registration is recognised the world over and following registration as a Children’s Nurse you can pursue a career in a variety of settings. These include specialist children’s hospitals, general hospitals and paediatric community services/teams.
If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will be joining this programme in academic years 2019/20 or 2020/21, the tuition fee will be £9,250 per annum.
The University may administer a small inflationary rise in tuition fees, in line with Government policy, in subsequent academic years as you progress through the course.
Subject to eligibility, UK and EU students joining this programme can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government to cover the full cost of tuition fees. UK and EU students enrolling on the programme may also be eligible to apply for additional funding to help with living costs. With effect from September 2020, this will include a grant of at least £5,000 per annum for new and continuing Nursing students.
Please note, if you are applying to study an MSc Nursing pathway, for student finance purposes you should apply for financial support as if you are an undergraduate Nursing student rather than for postgraduate funding.
