Discover Nutrition, Food and Health

We’re pleased to offer you a place to study on our BSc (Hons) Nutrition & Health course, which sits within our Medical School. Biology, food science, sociology, psychology. Nutrition brings many subjects together to help us understand the pivotal role food and exercise play in delivering healthier lifestyles and outcomes.

And you’ll be studying at a university that is in the Top 5 in the UK (Complete University Guide 2025 – Health Studies).

Can food prevent disease? What nutrients do our organs need? How do we educate people about holistic health and wellbeing? Answer these key questions and more at Edge Hill.

Facilities available to you

As part of Edge Hill’s Medical School, you’ll spend some time in the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine. And you’ll be able to take advantage of all the learning resources here at Edge Hill. Think sphygmomanometers (for measuring resting blood pressure to indicate cardiovascular risk), bariatric and geriatric suits to experience physical and mobility restrictions, wrist-based global positioning systems (garmin devices) that measure exercise duration, energy expenditure and heart rate, and actigraphs which estimate exercise intensity and track sleep quality and duration.

You’ll also have access to our food skills area based in our BioSciences building. In here, you can investigate how certain foods are produced, investigate their properties and conduct sensory evaluations. Use this space to explore current research and initiatives to promote health and prevent ill health.

When you become a student here, you’ll be allocated a Personal Tutor. They will be your main source of support in your academic department. They’ll be with you as you progress throughout your degree, supporting you in three areas: professional/career-related support, pastoral support and signposting you to information you need. But they aren’t just there when you need support. They are also there to celebrate your successes, help with planning your progress and much more.

Meet our students

From being in the laboratory doing pipette work to cooking in the kitchen, Edge Hill’s facilities are outstanding. We also use the anatomy and physiology equipment. To see the human body in 3D is such an amazing thing.

I’m fascinated with what we put in our bodies and why. On this course you don’t just study the biochemical aspects of nutrition but the psychosocial aspects as well.

Lydia Powner, BSc (Hons) Nutrition & Food

“The staff at Edge Hill have always been very understanding. I had problems with my mental health while at university, but I have a learning mentor and special equipment to help me in lectures. Thanks to this support, I have gone on to receive a high achievers scholarship, an Excellence Scholarship for my role in setting up the Vegan Society and created a plant-based food company which was runner up in Edge Hill’s Entrepreneurship Awards.”
