Researchers from the biology department, alongside social research consultancy Sustainable Solutions, will focus on unlocking opportunities for local food producers by identifying business opportunities, supply chain gaps and procurement challenges across Lancashire.
Thanks to the council’s funding, second-year BSc (Hons) Plant Science student, Alex Hinchliffe from Edge Hill has secured an internship and will be contributing significantly to major aspects of the research project.

George Talbot, PVC (Research & Knowledge Exchange) and Dean of Arts & Sciences, said: “We are delighted to have received this endorsement from Preston City Council for the excellent food policy research being carried out by Dr Sven Batke and his team at Edge Hill.
“Their work brings together food producers, policy makers and scientists in creative ways for the benefit of Lancashire’s economy and society.”
The research funding was agreed by Preston City Council’s Peoples Climate Jury, set up to address the opportunities and challenged of the climate change, supported by the Central Lancashire Procurement Practitioners group which will help map the local food supply system.
Councillor Suleman Sarwar, cabinet member for climate change at Preston City Council, said: ”Food systems are a main driver of climate change in the UK, and I am delighted to see Preston City Council moving forward with the People’s Climate Jury recommendation to increase access to locally produced food.
“This is a practical step towards a more local, low-carbon food system, and is also about fairness and supporting our farmers to thrive.”
Edge Hill’s findings will support Preston City Council, local anchor institutions and other public sector buyers to improve access for small producers, contributing to climate goals and the council’s Community Wealth Building strategy.

Plant Science student Alex Hinchliffe, said of the internship, “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my internship. Working with Sven has been a great experience, even with the dynamic and at times busy nature of the project.
“As this is a first of its kind study, it’s been an incredible learning opportunity. I’ve gained a deep understanding of the intricate process of this type of research and honed my ability to effectively communicate with industry partners.”
