PGCE
We offer standard and flexible Professional Graduate Certificates in Education (PGCEs) at early years, primary and secondary levels.
Early Years PGCE
The Early Years PGCE will train you to teach across the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, gaining both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience to be an outstanding teacher of children aged 3-7. Successful completion of the programme will see you awarded a a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS);
Primary PGCE
The Primary PGCE will train you to teach across the 5-11 age range, in Key Stages 1 and 2, achieving the national professional Standards required for the award of the recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The standard programme is 38 weeks, full-time and the flexible programme takes up to two years.
Secondary PGCE
The Secondary PGCE has been specifically designed for intending secondary school teachers, including a recommendation for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
As a trainee, you will study in one of the following curriculum subject areas, with standard and flexible routes available unless stated otherwise:
- Applied Art and Design (14-19)
- Business Education (14-19)
- Design and Technology (11-16)
- English (11-16)
- Geography (11-16), standard route only
- History (11-16), standard route only
- Information and Communication Technology (11-16)
- Mathematics (11-16)
- Modern Foreign Languages (11-16), pathways available in French, German, Mandarin, Spanish and Urdu
- Music (11-16)
- Physical Education (11-16)
- Psychology (14-19), standard route or assessment-only flexible route
- Religious Education (11-16)
- Science (11-16), pathways available in Chemistry, Physics and Science
All our Secondary PGCE courses prepare you to teach the 11-16 age range with a post-16 enhancement element, with the exception of Applied Art and Design and Business Education, which cover the 14-19 age range.

Post-Compulsory Education and Training
The PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education and Training is designed for graduates who do not yet have an approved qualification to teach and who are employed in FE colleges, work-based learning providers or public sector training such as the Police, Health Service, Prison Service and voluntary sector. It is also suitable for those seeking a new career in education and training. Subject to certain conditions teaching practice will be arranged for such students.
Future Teachers Programme
The Future Teachers Programme is a highly innovative partnership model of teacher training which is based in school rather than university. All aspects of the course will be taught by school and university trainers, providing strong links between theory and practice. The programme will immerse you in school life as you train to become a leader of learning and an outstanding teacher of chemistry, physics or mathematics. Successful completion leads to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses
If you want to teach chemistry or physics to ages 11-16, but have an insufficient level of science in your degree to gain entry to a science PGCE, then our subject knowledge enhancement courses in physics or chemistry could be for you.
If you want to teach mathematics to ages 11-16, but have an insufficient level of subject knowledge in your degree to gain entry to a Mathematics PGCE, a subject knowledge enhancement course in mathematics is also available.
Secondary Flexible Postgraduate Programme
Edge Hill is one of only a small number of providers in the country offering a Secondary Flexible Postgraduate programme. Flexible provision comprises 3 pathways and 10 subject specialisms and is designed to meet the needs of a diverse range of applicants wishing to enter the teaching profession.
