Faculty of Arts and Sciences Placement Bursary

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences Placement Bursary is paid to eligible UK or EU students who are undertaking a Sandwich Year or Study Abroad placement.

The Study Abroad placement must be outside of Europe and for a half or full year (i.e. single semester placements are not eligible).

Award Amounts

The award amounts for bursary payments are dependent on household income and placement location.

For household incomes of £25,000 per annum and above, the award amounts for academic year 2019/20 will be:

Placement Location Half Year Full Year
UK £250 £500
Europe £500 £1,000
Outside of Europe £750 £1,500

For household incomes below £25,000 per annum, the award amounts for academic year 2019/20 will be:

Placement Location Half Year Full Year
UK £500 £1,000
Europe £750 £1,500
Outside of Europe £1,000 £2,000

Please note, where an eligible student lives outside the UK and undertakes a placement in their home country, the bursary will be calculated using the UK placement location rate.

Household income is checked against data held in SLC HEBBS, normally against 2019/20 data, however if this information is not available it will be checked against 2018/19 data.

If you are undertaking a full year on placement in two different locations the award will be calculated based on the location for each half year.

Payment Arrangements

The payment arrangements will vary depending on your household income level.

  • For household incomes of £25,000 per annum and above, you will receive 50% of the bursary in September 2019 and 50% in February 2020;
  • For household incomes below £25,000 per annum, you will receive the bursary in full in September 2019.

There is no application process to access this bursary. Your eligibility will be automatically assessed. Payment will usually be made via BACS.
